Job Summary

WEST ABE is a consortium of educational sites within school districts and four county jails to help adults acquire basic skills. Monticello is the fiscal agent. This position involves providing direct instruction to adults in the ABE/GED program at Howard Lake Community Education evenings from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m., plus a half hour prep; the evening and hours may be changed. Up to 40 paid professional development hours are available annually.

Responsibilities

Provide direct instruction to adult students working to improve basic reading, math, digital skills, and/or prepare for the official GED exam. Duties also include student assessment, returning student phone calls, monitoring attendance, completing necessary record keeping, and other assignments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid MN teaching license.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and function well in a busy environment.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Computer experience and comfort with Internet, email, and Google apps preferred.
  • Physical presence in building/on site required.
Certification and Experience
  • Current MN Teaching License required.
  • Previous experience teaching within an adult basic education program, online instruction, and working with diverse populations preferred.
Essential Skills Required
  • Computer skills: knowledge of MS Office/Google or comparable.
  • Strong leadership and time management skills.
  • Effective decision making skills while acting within district policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Effective communication with students and staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information about students, families, and staff.
  • Experience working with diverse students and families.
