Infrastructure Engineer
Pay up to £52,442 plus 28.97% employer pension contributions, hybrid working, flexible hours, and great work life balance.
DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We are looking for an Infrastructure Engineer for our Enterprise Tooling Team to join our community of tech experts in DWP Digital.
We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives.
DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support and empower millions of people.
The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Proven experience of the delivery and support of infrastructure services and solutions, working within a hybrid server estate including multiple Operating Systems such as multiple Unix and Linux distributions, Windows Server and containerised platforms, to meet strategic plans and roadmaps including the use of Infrastructure as Code.
- Demonstrable experience of effectively communicating at different levels, across support and engineering, business users, architecture and suppliers. This will include evidence of taking decisions regarding the prioritisation of your ongoing tasks as well as involvement in planning current and future deliverables and providing regular reporting to product and delivery managers.
- Demonstrate experience of working within an ITIL Framework and specifically providing 2nd/3rd line support for incidents, problems and changes.
- Track record of using multiple diagnostic techniques and methods in analysing and resolving issues, working up new practices and procedures or modifying existing processes to improve performance.
- Proven experience of being able to script in multiple languages, as appropriate, to deploy or enhance features or to resolve issues on a Linux / UNIX distribution and Windows Servers.
- Demonstrate an ability to execute existing CICD pipelines, implement improvements to existing CICD pipelines and create new CICD pipelines utilising tools such as Terraform and Ansible Automation Platform.
You and your role
You'll work on designing, developing, deploying and supporting core IT services that monitor the health and performance of our infrastructure and applications. These services are critical to ensuring payments and citizen-facing systems operate without disruption.
You'll get hands-on experience with Autosys, our workload automation tool that orchestrates batch systems across the department. Previous experience is great, but not essential, we'll provide training for the right candidate. Most of our estate runs on Linux, with some Windows servers, so confidence in managing both remotely is important. You'll also work with our hybrid hosting environment, which includes a substantial public cloud footprint, so skills in deploying and supporting cloud instances, whether through the console or using Infrastructure as Code, will help you succeed. As we move toward containerisation, a good understanding of these technologies will be valuable.
Your role will involve investigating issues, ensuring our automation services run optimally and supporting upgrades and patches. You'll work to ITIL standards across incident, problem and change management, collaborating with internal and external partners to deliver robust, modern solutions. You'll also use tools like Splunk, Dynatrace and BMC to proactively monitor and improve resilience.
