The Product Owner placement

What is a Product Owner?

Product Owners are the voice of the customer, translating needs into clear requirements for our engineering team. You'll write user stories, prioritise the backlog, and help test new features to ensure they deliver real value.

A product owner works closely with the engineering team to refine documentation and when ready, engineers will provide an estimate of the work needed to complete the request.

Product Owners will then build and continuously maintain the product backlog, juggling these features into a priority order based on customer need and effort to complete. POs are also involved with testing the product to ensure the changes requested have been fulfilled.

How could this placement benefit you?

As a Product Owner placement student at myairops, you'll gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced commercial environment, working at the heart of Agile product development. You'll learn how to balance customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints, seeing first-hand how theory meets reality in a dynamic software company.

You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams including software engineers, UI/UX specialists, support engineers, and solution consultants. This role offers exposure to product strategy, backlog management, stakeholder engagement, and roadmap planning. You'll help shape features from concept to delivery, learning how to prioritise work for maximum impact.

You'll be paired with an experienced Product Owner who will guide and mentor you throughout your placement. Our team culture values collaboration, shared success, and continuous learning. Along the way, you'll also gain insight into areas like digital marketing, customer onboarding, platform integration, and business operations all within the exciting aviation technology sector.

This is a unique opportunity to develop your skills, contribute to real products, and build a strong foundation for a career in product management.

You'll be collaborating with our excellent Product and Customer Success Team

Joining myairops means joining a team of hugely talented individuals on a variety of different career paths. Throughout your placement you will have the opportunity to learn from them, via shadowing or coaching sessions, or even just via Q&A, which will give you exposure to many roles within the team.

We have included below a number of the roles that make up the myairops Product and Customer Success teams:

  • Senior Product Owner / President & Managing Director - Primary decision-maker guiding product strategy and commercial aspects, including pricing and market direction.
  • Product Owners - other product owners on the team
  • Customer/Prospect - The main source of requests and product feedback. Each brings unique needs and challenges, which the Product Owner must weigh to maximise ROI and deliver the most impactful improvements across the customer base.
  • Solution Consultants - Act as the first point of contact for customers during pre-sales and onboarding, offering well-defined requirements after initial triage. The Product Owner should ensure clear knowledge transfer to Solution Consultants and the wider team to communicate the value and capabilities of myairops products effectively.
  • Sales Executives - working with sales executives to win business and understand pricing and commercial challenges and requirements.
  • Marketing Executives - Develop plans to promote the product but aren't expected to know every detail. The Product Owner supports them with insights and guidance to help create effective campaigns and drive new business.
  • Support Engineers - Share customer issues and act as a bridge to the product team. While they don't commit to features, they flag requests so the Product Owner can guide the response, which may include future roadmap plans.
  • Software and Data Engineers - Work with the Product Owner to estimate effort and refine clear requirements. They handle all engineering tasks to meet acceptance criteria, with the PO providing any extra info needed.
  • UI Specialists - Support the Product Owner with key interface components and standards when creating wireframes and workflows. While UI and UX differ, they often influence each other.
