We are looking for a HPC Computational Engineer to join a specialist technical team developing high-performance software, numerical algorithms and large-scale simulation capabilities. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys solving challenging computational problems, working with modern HPC infrastructure and developing software that supports demanding scientific and engineering applications. The position combines hands-on technical development with opportunities to influence computational strategy, introduce new technologies and contribute to collaborative research and engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimise and maintain high-performance scientific and engineering software.
  • Design and implement numerical algorithms to solve complex computational problems.
  • Build and improve large-scale modelling and simulation applications.
  • Evaluate and integrate new HPC technologies, including accelerator-based computing and emerging hardware architectures.
  • Improve software performance, scalability and efficiency across parallel computing environments.
  • Contribute to the development of advanced simulation frameworks and virtual modelling technologies.
  • Work alongside software engineers, computational scientists and technical specialists to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Provide technical direction across development activities, supporting project delivery and mentoring other engineers.
  • Investigate new computational approaches and contribute to longer-term technology development.

We are interested in speaking with engineers who have a strong background in scientific computing, numerical software development or computational engineering.

Essential experience:

  • Strong programming experience with C++, C, Fortran or Rust, ideally alongside Python or another scripting language.
  • Hands-on experience working with High Performance Computing (HPC) systems or large-scale computational environments.
  • Good understanding of numerical methods, mathematical modelling or scientific algorithms.
  • Experience developing, maintaining or optimising computationally intensive software.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Experience contributing to technically complex software or engineering projects.
  • Ability to investigate challenging technical problems and develop practical solutions.

Desirable experience:

  • Parallel programming, distributed computing or GPU acceleration.
  • Experience with MPI, OpenMP, CUDA or similar HPC technologies.
  • Performance profiling, code optimisation and scalability improvements.
  • Scientific simulation, numerical analysis or uncertainty quantification.
  • Exposure to digital twins, advanced modelling platforms or simulation frameworks.
  • Experience leading technical projects or mentoring other engineers.
  • A PhD or advanced degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline, although equivalent industry experience will also be considered.

Benefits

  • Performance-related bonus.
  • Excellent pension provision.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Flexible working arrangements where operationally possible.
  • Opportunities for technical development and progression.
  • Exposure to advanced HPC technologies and complex computational engineering challenges.
  • The chance to work alongside experienced specialists on technically demanding projects.
