This is a Full Time, Fixed-Term Contract until 31 March 2026 based in London with hybrid working.

What you will be doing

The Development Advice teams support local communities, including through local authority partners, in appreciating the significance of the historic environment, the local and national importance of assets and their potential to deliver benefits for the community including economic growth, housing supply and sustainable energy by promoting the effective use of the planning system at strategic and local levels.

As part of this team, your primary role is to take delegated responsibility for providing Historic England's advice on planning policy and strategic planning matters.The principal aspect of the role is to provide advice to local authority partners in the preparation and revision of development plans and local communities in relation to the historic environment and the planning process.Applying the ethos of 'constructive conservation' and making effective use of Historic England's Conservation Principles in all their advisory work, you will also provide policy advice on strategic planning matters such as national infrastructure projects and on partners' strategic plans, as well as contributing to national and local guidance.

Please note that the role:

requires occasional travel to sites not serviced by public transport.

may require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

Who we are looking for

Educated to degree level or equivalent in town planning or a closely related subject, or significant experience in a relevant field

A thorough understanding of the national planning system and its legislative context at both the strategic and local level and its role in the sustainable management of the historic environment

Substantial practical experience of local and/or strategic planning processes, particularly in plan preparation

Practical experience of development management, urban design and/or historic environment conservation

Ability to engender enthusiasm for the historic environment

Excellent oral and written communication skills
