Job Description
Higher Healthcare Technical Officer (HHTO)

As a Higher Healthcare Technical Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting safe, high quality diagnostic and therapeutic services within our RCI laboratories. You will carry out routine and non routine laboratory tasks that ensure accurate testing, efficient sample handling, and reliable results for patient care.

You will prepare samples and reagents, operate laboratory equipment, contribute to environmental monitoring, maintain accurate records, and support colleagues by sharing knowledge and demonstrating procedures. This hands on role requires attention to detail, initiative, and a commitment to high standards.

Main Duties
  • Support and train less experienced staff.
  • Undertake precise, repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples.
  • Handle blood samples and a range of equipment.
  • Provide support during the laboratory's routine opening hours.
  • Manually handle equipment weighing up to 13 kg, with or without mechanical aids.
  • Participate in a shift rota that may include evenings, weekends or public holidays.

Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 qualification e.g. A Levels or National Diploma in a relevant subject area, or extensive experience in logistics/supply chain, or equivalent routine NHSBT procedures experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
Experience
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of using computers and basic IT programmes.
