Job Description

The HGV Class 1 Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of palletised goods to various destinations within agreed schedules.

The role involves operating articulated vehicles in compliance with all relevant road safety and transport regulations.

The driver ensures that goods are loaded, secured, and unloaded correctly, using appropriate equipment such as pump trucks, tail lifts, and ratchet strapping.

Accurate completion of delivery documentation and adherence to tachograph regulations are essential.

Job Duties

• Operate HGV Class 1 vehicles safely and efficiently, adhering to all legal and company requirements.
• Load and unload palletised goods using pump trucks, tail lifts, and secure loads with ratchet strapping as necessary.
• Plan routes and schedules to ensure timely deliveries within the West Midlands and surrounding areas.
• Complete all necessary paperwork accurately, including delivery notes, vehicle checks, and tachograph records.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any defects or maintenance needs promptly.
• Maintain high standards of customer service during all interactions.
• Comply with all health and safety regulations, ensuring safe working practises at all times.
• Adhere to working time regulations and company policies regarding driving hours.

Required Qualifications

• Valid HGV Class 1 licence.
• Current Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card.
• Valid digital tachograph card.

Education

Applicants should have a minimum of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 or equivalent in driving or transport-related discipline.

Formal education beyond this is desirable but not essential.

Experience

• At least 12 months' experience driving HGV Class 1 vehicles, preferably within a general haulage or palletised delivery environment.
• Experience operating pump trucks, tail lifts, and using ratchet strapping to secure loads.

Knowledge and Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of road safety laws, driving hours regulations, and vehicle maintenance procedures.
• Proficient in route planning and time management to meet delivery schedules.
• Ability to complete accurate documentation and maintain compliance with tachograph regulations.
• Strong communication skills and customer service awareness.
• Physical fitness to handle loading and unloading duties safely.

Preferred Qualifications

• Additional training or certification in health and safety or vehicle maintenance is advantageous.
• Previous experience working within the West Midlands area is beneficial.

Working Conditions

The role requires working full-time hours, often involving early starts and occasional late finishes.

The position is primarily based in Oldbury with travel to various delivery sites across the West Midlands and neighbouring regions.

Drivers must be prepared to work in varying weather conditions and undertake manual handling duties as part of the role.

Compliance with company health and safety policies and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment is mandatory at all times.
