Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Health and Safety Manager to support the safe delivery of a complex nuclear programme within a highly regulated environment. The role will work closely with senior HSSE leadership to champion a strong safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide subject matter expertise across design, construction, commissioning, and operational phases. This position requires confident engagement with regulators, contractors, and project teams to embed consistent and effective health and safety practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support senior HSSE leadership on all health and safety matters, promoting a positive and proactive safety culture.
  • Champion best practice health and safety behaviours across project teams, contractors, and the supply chain.
  • Ensure compliance with UK health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations, and other applicable standards.
  • Establish and maintain governance frameworks for monitoring, reporting, and improving health and safety performance.
  • Cascade programme level health and safety requirements across all project activities.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and high hazard safety requirements.
  • Lead engagement with regulators, including preparation and submission of compliance documentation and reports.
  • Identify, assess, and support mitigation of nuclear and conventional health and safety risks across all lifecycle phases.
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, suppliers, and partners to ensure consistent safety standards.
  • Provide health and safety input into design reviews, constructability reviews, and key project milestones.
  • Develop and deliver health and safety materials, including inductions, mobilisation, and training content.
  • Define KPIs and reporting mechanisms to track performance and identify leading indicators.
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership on risks, compliance status, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support organisational learning and continuous improvement, incorporating innovation and emerging best practice.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful working environment.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety management systems, including ISO 45001.
  • Excellent understanding of CDM Regulations and construction safety management on large programmes.
  • Proven ability to engage with regulators and lead assurance and compliance activities.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience defining, tracking, and interpreting safety metrics.
  • Ability to communicate technical health and safety principles to technical and non technical audiences.
  • Leadership qualities that promote a positive, behaviour based safety culture.
  • Adaptability and resilience in fast paced, evolving programme environments.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills across multi party teams.
  • Experience in health and safety management within the nuclear sector or equivalent high hazard, highly regulated industries (e.g. oil & gas, defence, transport).
  • Demonstrable experience supporting major infrastructure or engineering programmes.
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies such as the HSE and nuclear or environmental regulators.
  • Proven track record of influencing safety culture across complex organisations and supply chains.
  • Degree in Health & Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered membership of IOSH (or equivalent).
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification desirable.
