Head of Finance (reporting to the CEO)

Permanent £60,000 - £65,-37.5 hours per week (flexible)

Hybrid - up to 40% WFH Croydon Almshouses Croydon

About us
Croydon Almshouses is the oldest charity in Croydon, serving the community for over 550 years. Since 1447 we have provided almshouse accommodation to older people connected to Croydon who are affected by poverty. For the past 40 years we have also awarded grants to voluntary, community and faith sector organisations and individuals across the Borough. Our vision is to create thriving communities where everyone can live with dignity and independence, using our resources and agility to reduce the impact of poverty in Croydon.

The opportunity
This senior finance role gives real influence to shape how the organisation operates and grows its impact to best support the Croydon community. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team you will work closely with the CEO and Board, providing clear financial leadership, insight and challenge to ensure the charity is financially resilient, operationally effective, and positioned to deliver on its mission.

  • Lead financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and statutory reporting
  • Ensure compliance with charity finance regulations and best practice (Charity Code + SORP)
  • Strengthen financial systems, controls and ways of working to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Steward assets, reserves and endowments to ensure long term sustainability and responsible innovation
  • Lead financial risk management and support confident organisational decision making
  • Support and develop colleagues through strong and collaborative line management
  • Drive positive organisational change with clarity and credibility
  • This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at both strategic and operational levels and can bring people together as the organisation evolves.

About you

We seek a Head of Finance who can bring integrity to everything they do, remains calm under pressure and prioritises confidently in a fast moving, complex, evolving environment. You are comfortable providing constructive challenge, credible at a senior level, and bring a modern, strategic mindset - financially astute, digitally capable and focused on continuous improvement. Above all you are approachable, down to earth with plenty of common sense and a good sense of humour.

Essential criteria

  • A degree in Finance, Business, Economics or related fields, or demonstrable extensive experience and a chartered accounting or financial qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA)
  • Understanding of charity finance regulations and the UK Charity Code, SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice)
  • Experience in developing and implementing financial strategies and systems, with a focus on operational improvement and effectiveness
  • Experience stewarding financial assets, reserves and endowments for long term sustainability and innovative impact
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of financial management systems and risk management
  • Excellent organisation skills, with experience in project management, and a proven ability to plan, organise, and lead the implementation of organisation wide plans and processes
  • A commitment to embracing and embedding the values of CA throughout the organisation
