AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations-from foundational services such as Amazon S3 and EC2 to continually released new features. As a member of the UC organization, you support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers requiring specialized security solutions for cloud services. This region service team is a customer experience-oriented group seeking a self-motivated engineer who can solve complex problems and contribute to improving service support. A Systems Engineer will drive opportunities to automate and simplify daily operations and scale organizational operations.
A day in the life includes working in a collaborative environment, diving into root cause analysis of customer issues, investigating metrics, and implementing Operational Excellence practices to automate manual processes. Our engineers use Linux skills to troubleshoot, update software, and provide data and metrics to manage capacity and efficiency, while applying networking knowledge to identify and resolve connectivity issues. The role emphasizes being a self-starter, adaptable to ambiguity and change, and customer-obsessed with a focus on rapid resolutions.

Responsibilities
- Work proactively to solve potential problems and inefficiencies. Communicate clearly and collaborate with others to deliver results with minimal supervision.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to troubleshoot high-severity issues.
- Analyze dashboards and investigate metrics with a view toward improvements.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose problems and develop solutions.
- Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and runbooks for documentation.
- Discuss radical new approaches to automate operational issues, assess risks, and develop creative solutions.

Basic Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Linux system administration
- Experience of systems automation using BASH, Python, Perl, etc.
- Experience of network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, switching, HTTP)
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to cloud computing concepts and design considerations
- Experience in a production environment
