Job Description

As a GP Receptionist, you will be the welcoming face and voice of our practice, providing a professional and compassionate first point of contact for patients. You will manage appointments, handle enquiries, support clinicians, and help ensure the smooth day-to day running of the practice. This is a varied and fast paced role that requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a caring, patient focused approach.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

Greet patients and visitors in a polite, professional manner; answer calls promptly and direct enquiries appropriately; book, amend and cancel appointments using the practice clinical system; handle patient queries sensitively and confidentially, and assist with registration forms and general paperwork.

Administrative Duties

Maintain accurate patient records, including scanning and filing medical documents; liaise with clinicians, nurses and colleagues as required.

Operational Support

Ensure reception and waiting areas are tidy and welcoming; follow practice procedures for confidentiality and data protection; support administrative staff during busy periods.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong organisational skills and attention to detail; ability to work under pressure; good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and clinical systems; professional and empathetic manner.

Desirable: Experience in a GP practice or healthcare setting; knowledge of medical terminology; experience using clinical systems such as EMIS.

Personal Attributes & Compliance

Friendly, reliable and punctual; discreet and able to maintain confidentiality; proactive team player; understanding of patient confidentiality and GDPR, with willingness to undertake relevant training.

Experience

Qualifications
  • Good standard of general education, including GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics
  • Willingness to undertake further training and professional development as required
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology
