As Government Analyst, you'll lead the Isle of Man Government Laboratory, based in Douglas, the main town in the Isle of Man. You will oversee the delivery of high-quality chemical and microbiological analysis for Government, public bodies and the commercial sector. Your work will support essential services across the Island - from food safety and water quality to environmental monitoring and national resilience planning.
In this specialist role, you will manage laboratory resources, guide a highly skilled team, and ensure the continued delivery of a robust, accredited analytical service. You will use your scientific expertise to interpret complex data, provide clear professional advice, and uphold our UKAS accredited standards across a varied analytical programme.
As part of this role, you will be appointed as Public Analyst for the Island, responsible for delivery of analysis for official food control, and in support of local food producers. Your team will also play a vital role in safeguarding the Island's water supply by testing mains and private drinking water, and you'll contribute to our expanding environmental analysis, including sea water, surface water and biota. This includes the monitoring of radioactivity arising from historical events such as Chernobyl and Fukushima.
As a statutory member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, and a key contributor to the Health Protection Committee and Resilience Group, you'll serve as the principal scientific adviser within your remit, operating with a high degree of autonomy and trust.
QualificationsFor this role we are seeking either:
- Applicants who are qualified Public Analysts with a Mastership in Chemical Analysis (M.Chem.A) postgraduate qualification awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
- Applicants who have achieved Parts A and B of the M.Chem.A and would be willing to obtain Part C within two years from appointment and possess a qualification specifically in Analytical Chemistry (e.g. Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry).
We are also open to applications from individuals only interested in undertaking the Public Analyst function, which can be completed remotely from the UK with occasional visits to the Island.

A basic police check is required for this post, the cost of which will be covered by the Isle of Man Government.
