Job Description

Reed Engineering and Manufacturing are working with a leading Engineering and Manufacturing company.

Key Responsibilities

Furnace/Melting Technician

  • Operate niche specialised furnaces within the site
  • Melt materials such as nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, or stainless steels in compliance with process specifications.
  • Follow melting curves, target temperatures, alloy additions, and hold times precisely.
  • Conduct alloy sampling and support chemical analysis processes.
  • Pour molten metal into moulds safely and accurately.

Furnace Preparation & Setup

  • Prepare crucibles, furnace linings, charge materials, and tools to exact quality standards.
  • Calibrate and check equipment prior to melting cycles.
  • Verify material batches, heat numbers, and documentation before starting operations.

Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain full traceability of materials, melts, and process parameters.
  • Record furnace data, temperatures, times, and deviations accurately.
  • Follow quality approvals such as AS9100, NADCAP, and other internal quality procedures.
  • Support root-cause investigations for non-conformance or melt-related issues.

Safety & Process Control

  • Follow strict PPE and safety procedures.
  • Complete risk assessments, pre-use checks etc
  • Report hazards, near-misses, or equipment issues immediately.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support improvements in furnace efficiency, melt quality, and process repeatability.
  • Contribute to lean manufacturing or 5S initiatives.
  • Assist in updating standard operating procedures.

Shift Support

  • Work closely with team members to maintain consistent production flow.
  • Complete thorough handovers including melt logs, quality notes, and equipment status.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • Experience in melting, casting, foundry, forging or heat treatment operations, or heavy manufacturing would be highly advantageous
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow tightly controlled processes.
  • Safety-focused mindset, especially in high-temperature environments.
  • Ability to interpret work instructions, melting parameters, and technical documents.
