Functional Skills Maths Teacher

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Maths Tutor/Teacher to join our team within a small, specialist alternative provision. This role is based primarily at our Thurston site, working alongside a team of skilled facilitators to deliver a bespoke, therapeutic and vocational curriculum.
The position will focus mainly on Functional Skills Maths, with some GCSE Maths teaching where appropriate (or a willingness to develop in this area). You will support students with a range of needs, including SEND, helping them to re-engage with education and build confidence in numeracy.
Sessions take place during school hours, 3-5 days per week during term-time only.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver one-to-one and small group Maths sessions tailored to individual learning needs
- Plan and implement engaging, differentiated lessons, primarily at Functional Skills level, with some GCSE content
- Support students in understanding key mathematical concepts and improving attainment
- Create a positive, nurturing learning environment that builds confidence and engagement
- Use a relational, trauma-informed approach to support behaviour and wellbeing
- Track and communicate student progress with the Specialism Coordinator
- Maintain accurate records and adapt teaching strategies accordingly
- Contribute to EHCP reviews, reports and personalised provision planning
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide holistic support for learners
We are looking for someone who:
- Has strong knowledge of Maths (Functional Skills and GCSE)
- Is passionate about working in an alternative provision setting
- Can engage and support learners with SEND and varied learning needs
- Is patient, empathetic, and committed to building positive relationships
- Is flexible, creative, and able to adapt teaching approaches
- QTS, PGCE or equivalent - preferred but not essential
- Alternatively, relevant tutoring or teaching experience will be considered where strong practical skills are demonstrated
- Confidence delivering Maths at GCSE level (or willingness to develop)
- Experience working with SEND students - desirable
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Enhanced DBS (within 12 months) or willingness to obtain one
