Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Maths Tutor/Teacher to join our team within a small, specialist alternative provision. This role is based primarily at our Thurston site, working alongside a team of skilled facilitators to deliver a bespoke, therapeutic and vocational curriculum.

The position will focus mainly on Functional Skills Maths, with some GCSE Maths teaching where appropriate (or a willingness to develop in this area). You will support students with a range of needs, including SEND, helping them to re-engage with education and build confidence in numeracy.

Sessions take place during school hours, 3-5 days per week during term-time only.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver one-to-one and small group Maths sessions tailored to individual learning needs
  • Plan and implement engaging, differentiated lessons, primarily at Functional Skills level, with some GCSE content
  • Support students in understanding key mathematical concepts and improving attainment
  • Create a positive, nurturing learning environment that builds confidence and engagement
  • Use a relational, trauma-informed approach to support behaviour and wellbeing
  • Track and communicate student progress with the Specialism Coordinator
  • Maintain accurate records and adapt teaching strategies accordingly
  • Contribute to EHCP reviews, reports and personalised provision planning
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide holistic support for learners
About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has strong knowledge of Maths (Functional Skills and GCSE)
  • Is passionate about working in an alternative provision setting
  • Can engage and support learners with SEND and varied learning needs
  • Is patient, empathetic, and committed to building positive relationships
  • Is flexible, creative, and able to adapt teaching approaches
Requirements
  • QTS, PGCE or equivalent - preferred but not essential
  • Alternatively, relevant tutoring or teaching experience will be considered where strong practical skills are demonstrated
  • Confidence delivering Maths at GCSE level (or willingness to develop)
  • Experience working with SEND students - desirable
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Enhanced DBS (within 12 months) or willingness to obtain one
Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a small, supportive team making a genuine impact
  • Deliver a bespoke curriculum combining academic, therapeutic and vocational learning
  • Opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students
  • Work in a setting that prioritises engagement, wellbeing and individual progress
