Freedom of Information Officer

Are you highly organised, motivated, and passionate about supporting openness within the NHS? We are seeking a Freedom of Information Officer to play a vital role in managing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests received by the Trust.

In this key position, you will ensure the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and complies with NHS requirements relating to claims. Working collaboratively with teams across the organisation, you will help locate, review and prepare information, apply relevant exemptions, and deliver accurate, timely responses to applicants including members of the public, the media and other stakeholders.

Main duties of the job

What you'll be doing

  • Managing and coordinating FOI requests from initial receipt to final response
  • Working closely with internal departments to gather and review information
  • Applying appropriate FOI exemptions and ensuring legal compliance
  • Producing clear, accurate and timely responses to a wide range of applicants
  • Maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with integrity

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent level of experience working at a similar level in specialist area or ISEB qualification in FOI.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and associated legislation.
  • Understanding of information governance and data protection requirements.
  • Knowledge of administrative processes relating to FOI requests and claims management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to produce clear reports, briefings, and correspondence.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • IT skills.
Experience
  • Experience of working in a governance, FOI, or compliance role within the NHS or public sector.
  • Experience managing Freedom of Information requests or similar statutory information requests.
  • Experience maintaining case management systems or databases.
Other
  • Professional, diplomatic, and able to deal with challenging situations and stakeholders.
