About us:

There has never been a more exciting time to join the Fuel & Inerting Systems team at Airbus. We are committed to continually improving and supporting our current aircraft, while also making game-changing headway with our revolutionary new fleet, such as the A321XLR and AULR. We are also breaking boundaries with our exciting Hydrogen-fuelled aircraft plans and paving the way for 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel use to reduce our environmental footprint.

If this intrigues you, come and join us at the forefront of Airbus's sustainability vision, where you will contribute to where Airbus goes next. We value collaboration, trust, and open-mindedness and are looking for similar like-minded engineers to help us lead the way into the future.

As a dynamic team, we are recognised worldwide as a technical leader in commercial fuel systems, responsible for the end-to-end development of the fuel system for all our aircraft, including:
  • Architecture;
  • Design;
  • Aircraft Integration;
  • Certification;
  • In-Service Support.

The Fuel & Inerting System presents many technical and business challenges that must be understood and managed. It operates in a very hostile environment at extremes of both temperature and humidity, with the added challenge of safety being our number one priority due to the volatile nature of jet and hydrogen-based fuels. As an engineer in our team, understanding these topics and issues will be the focus of your time here.

What you will be doing:

From the moment you join, you will be an integral part of the Fluid Mechanical department within the Fuel & Inerting Domain. Our teams are responsible for the end-to-end design of the complete fuel system across every commercial Airbus aircraft, at all stages of the development lifecycle.

You can expect to contribute to meaningful work across our entire fleet, from R&T projects like to supporting the flight test campaigns of the AULR. The work you complete with us will not be limited to traditional kerosene-based fuel systems; it will also involve new and novel technologies and the impact that fuels such as Hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel will have on these systems.

You will operate in a challenging environment and be given a real and valued role within the Fluid Mechanical team. Our areas of expertise include:
  • Computer-based engineering (software, modelling);
  • Fluid-mechanical and Inerting System Design;
  • Hydrogen Fuel System Development;
  • Fuel Chemistry.

The typical tasks of the Fluid Mechanical team can involve trades of architecture choices for the fuel system, weighing up options for the best compromise solution for the overall aircraft. You will also get involved in the ongoing airworthiness activities for the system equipment. Developing and running simulations of the fuel systems and fluid flows is a core activity, requiring an understanding of the fundamental physics and implementing equations representing those physics to model the system behaviour. In the Fuel Sciences team the activities focus on the fuel properties ensuring a consistent fuel is available at airports and that our aircraft are capable of receiving new or changing fuels.

Our philosophy is to have the best systems, people and partnerships, and our teams work collaboratively within Fuel Systems, with other teams across Airbus and outside Airbus. You will have the flexibility to tailor your year according to what interests and inspires you while developing your knowledge of our systems and aircraft. You will have the opportunity to have varied placements working with experienced teams in the areas listed above.

We value personal well-being and the way we act as engineers. To help us understand your interests, please propose the area that most inspires you when applying via your cover letter.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only . Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Your application should include a CV along with a Cover Letter outlining your motivation and suitability for the role.

We are looking for Interns who are studying (but is not limited to) one of the following areas of expertise/degrees:
  • Aerospace and/or Aeronautical Engineering;
  • Chemistry and/or Chemical Engineering;
  • Computer Modelling;
  • Systems Engineering;
  • Mechanical and/or Mechatronic Engineering;
  • Software Engineering.

Successful candidates will also be:
  • Naturally excited to work in the aviation industry, to explore engineering principles and create solutions based on technical intuition & evidence;
  • Curious to learn new skills and look at things in different ways;
  • Have the ability to act with integrity and to speak up when necessary;
  • A team player with the ability to work with others in an open, collaborative style;
  • Proficient in oral and written communication styles;
  • Understand and appreciate the future of aviation - specifically the impact new fuels and technologies can have on the Fuel & Inerting System design.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
