Job Description

This post is responsible for providing comprehensive financial management services, including budget planning, financial reporting, and system improvements.

This role involves advising senior budget holders, producing monthly financial reports, and leading financial inputs for business cases.

Additionally, the Finance Manager presents financial management training courses and supports the professional development of the Management Accounts team. Effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders are essential for success in this role.

Main duties of the job

This role works closely with a Finance Business Partner (responsible for a specific area of Trust finances) and is responsible for planning, developing, and monitoring budgets, providing financial advice, and producing monthly financial reports.

It includes providing financial inputs for business cases, performing complex analysis, development of CIP schemes and ensuring continuous improvement of financial systems.

The Finance team works widely across the Trust at all levels up to Board and with a variety of other partners such as external NHS Trusts, commercial organisations, Heathrow Airport, Stadia, London's Air Ambulance and Healthcare UK.

Annual leave starts at 27 days rising to 33 days, plus bank holidays, in line with agenda for change (NHS terms and conditions).

Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities include planning, developing, and monitoring budgets, advising and challenging senior budget holders, and managing the production of monthly financial positions. The role also involves leading the financial input for business cases, performing complex analysis, and ensuring continuous improvement of financial systems. Additionally, the Finance Manager is tasked with developing management information, preparing finance reports for the Board, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.

The role will have line management responsibilities, including performance appraisals and setting objectives. The role requires presenting financial management training courses for budget holders and supporting the professional development of the Management Accounts team. Effective communication and collaboration with senior management, external stakeholders, and other finance staff are essential for the successful execution of these duties.

The role also plays a crucial role in developing financial and corporate strategies, ensuring financial control, and maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations.

Person Specification Qualifications, Accreditations, Education
  • CCAB qualified accountant with significant post qualification experience. Full institute member
  • Experience of operating at a strategic level
  • Experience and expertise in finance management, strategic and staff leadership
  • Relevant post qualification experience and training to meet mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements
Knowledge and Skills
  • Expert knowledge of financial and accounting procedures and NHS finance policies
  • Conflict resolution and the ability to find solutions to the conflicting goals of operational need and financial balance
  • In depth knowledge of accounting practice in the NHS and the ability to explain these clearly to non accountants
  • Aware of HR policy and procedures
  • Have the staff management skills to manage professional staff who work with some autonomy.
  • Ability to manage a large workload and plan work according to changing priorities and deadlines
Experience
  • Experience monthly reporting cycles, and of preparing papers for senior management
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills. Report writing
  • Knowledge and experience of CIP plans and targets
  • Experience of financial management, working with senior managers to control expenditure within tight limits.
  • Experience of managing a team of Finance analysts.
