Fencing Coach
This role is for a BFA-qualified coach who will lead and develop fencing for pupils in Years 9-13, running term-time coaching sessions, refereeing fixtures and growing a club currently of around 15 fencers. You will work with the Director of Sport and the staff member in charge of fencing to deliver high-quality foil coaching, support pupils competing at Public Schools events and contribute to a welcoming sporting culture on a large campus.
What you'll be doing
- Plan and deliver purposeful, age-appropriate fencing coaching sessions (mainly foil) for Years 9-13.
- Referee matches at school fixtures (home and away) and support match organisation as required.
- Support the staff member in charge of fencing to maintain standards, behaviour expectations and progression pathways for pupils.
- Prepare pupils for the Public Schools Fencing Championships (three full days in March) and other competitions.
- Maintain professional conduct at all times and work with the safeguarding and pastoral teams to protect pupil welfare.
- Liaise with the Director of Sport about timetable, fixtures and any additional training sessions or trips.
(Practical pattern) Sessions currently run during term time: Tuesdays 16:00-18:00 and Thursdays 15:00-18:00, with earlier Thursday starts (14:00) when away; some Saturday refereeing or optional training is required. There is flexibility to extend sessions and occasional travel for competitions.
What we're looking for
Essential
- BFA coaching qualification and registration on the BFA Coaching Register.
- Experience coaching young fencers and delivering structured sessions.
- Ability to referee school fixtures and manage match situations calmly.
- Strong professional integrity, discretion and the ability to build positive rapport with pupils.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable
- Proven experience coaching foil across a range of ages/abilities.
- Experience preparing pupils for multi-day competitions or championship events.
If your background is primarily in coaching rather than school employment, this role can form part of an existing coaching circuit or be developed into a larger school-based commitment.
About the team
The Sports Department runs a broad programme beyond the core sports and includes fencing among many options. The Fencing Club currently comprises about 15 pupils from Years 9-13 and sits within a department that supports both school and House fixtures. You will work closely with the Director of Sport and the staff member in charge of fencing and have access to on-site sports facilities and administrative support for fixtures and travel.
