Job Description
Experienced Staff Nurse - MacGregor Ward

The closing date is 30 April 2026.

We are looking for experienced innovative, motivated and passionate children's nurses who enjoy the challenges and excitement of a busy, acute general paediatric ward and paediatric assessment unit. Your remit would cover both our acute care and elective care patients, giving a wide variety of opportunities.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a high standard of nursing care for infants, children and young people within a family centred environment, in accordance with the ward philosophy.
  • Support junior colleagues, students, clinical sisters and the ward manager, adhering to national and trust guidelines.
  • Work as part of a multi disciplinary team and take charge of any nursing shift as required.
Job responsibilities
  • Co ordinate and provide skilled nursing care (without direct supervision) to children and young people, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Be competent to manage and implement the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of a high standard of evidence based care to infants, children, young people and their families.
  • Deliver effective discharge planning of children, liaising with other professionals and agencies as required.
  • Promote family centred care and act as an advocate for children.
  • Maximise opportunities for health promotion and health education for patients and their families.
  • Provide nursing care to high dependency children during both the acute phase and when stabilised.
  • Provide support to students and perform mentor role or attend mentor and assessing course in line with NMC standards.
  • Provide escort in the transfer of children to other health care providers as required.
  • Provide telephone advice for parents requesting information and support.
  • Organise own time and workload efficiently, on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Be a role model to all staff and support all members of the ward team.
  • Accept responsibility for the provision of effective prevention and control within the Trust in liaison with the Trusts Infection Control Team.
  • Apply good infection control practice and ensure compliance with all infection control policies.
  • Coordinate and lead a team of nurses providing care during a clinical shift as required.
  • Deputise for ward manager and clinical sisters in their absence.
  • Participate in promotion and implementation of innovative practice within the ward environment.
  • Ensure attendance and compliance with all mandatory training as per trust policy.
  • Attend annual personal development review and complete a personal and professional development plan with agreed learning objectives.
  • Attend relevant internal and external training days.
  • Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are followed at all times and attend training Child Protection Level 3.
  • Promote effective working relationships with all departments.
  • Provide advice regarding management of children in other areas throughout the trust (e.g. Accident and Emergency).
  • Participate in shared care of children with other paediatric centres and community nursing team.
  • Evaluate current research findings and, if appropriate, implement into practice on the ward.
  • Promote quality of care delivery and participate in the audit process at ward and trust level.
  • Participate in the investigation of any complaints received as required.
  • Carry out and evaluate personal research projects.
  • Actively participate in clinical supervision.
  • Adhere to Trust and national guidelines.
  • In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, comply with the Trusts Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Take all reasonable steps to prevent injury to yourself, fellow employees and others affected by your actions or omissions at work.
  • Report any defects relating to departmental equipment and any hazardous or potentially hazardous areas of work.
  • Ensure accurate completion of clinical incident forms in accordance with Trust Policy.
Person specification - qualifications
  • Higher Diploma / Degree RSCN/ RNC / R Children & Young Peoples Nurses.
  • Evidence of CPD.
  • Numeracy and IT skills.
Experience
  • Experienced paediatric nurses.
  • 12 months current experience in acute paediatrics.
