Engineer / Higher Engineer - Acoustics

We are recruiting for an Acoustic Engineer / Calibration Technician to join our ultrasound and underwater acoustics team based in Wraysbury . In this role, you will perform a variety of tasks involved in the delivery of science and operation of the science facilities and related capabilities. You will be part of the underwater acoustics team at NPL, directed by senior staff in the group.
The primary facility you will be based at is a floating test and calibration laboratory located on a reservoir setting ( Wraysbury ). The working environment involves year-round outdoor activity. While the work is technical and requires accuracy and attention to detail, the role also demands practical skills and a solution-focused approach.
The job requires you to possess an aptitude for precise and meticulous practical work, showing attention to detail. The main requirements of the role include:
- Preparing and carrying out practical experimental work using various test facilities for research projects and external customers
- Upkeep of the test facilities, including operational and maintenance tasks
- Maintaining a clean, sustainable, and safe working environment, adhering to all Health and Safety and Security rules
- Good timekeeping, ability to complete tasks to high quality within agreed timescales, and flexibility to work across multiple facility locations, primarily at the reservoir-based facility
Please note this role is known internally as a Scientist or Higher Scientist.
As an Engineer/Higher Engineer within the underwater acoustics team, no specific experience in acoustics is required, but you should have a background that demonstrates the ability to quickly learn and operate measurement instrumentation effectively.

- Proven experience in a Laboratory/Engineering environment
- Ability to work independently, be proactive, and collaborate within a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Mechanically-minded aptitude
- High attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to changing environments, recognize problems, and take pre-emptive action
It would be great if you also have:
- Experience delivering technical measurement services
- Technical education or experience in acoustics or underwater acoustics
- Experience with test and calibration of measurement equipment and instrumentation
- Experience working within an accreditation and quality-driven environment
- Understanding and experience with LabVIEW
