Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and the Instructional Technology Coordinator, this position is responsible for delivering STEM instruction to elementary students. This position is also responsible for collaborating with other STEM teachers and instructional coaches in promoting interdisciplinary STEM activities into the core curriculum.

Essential Job Functions
  • Teach STEM skills, practices and thinking to elementary students.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials in line with the curriculum.
  • Incorporate hands on activities and project based learning opportunities into the classroom.
  • Attend professional development and stay up to date with the latest research and best practice in STEM and incorporate them into teaching methods.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, and performance assessments, which guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and student learning.
  • Personalize instruction based upon the needs of students.
  • Use technology to promote learning, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Work directly with district and school administrators and building staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of STEM initiatives and curriculum.
  • Organize, develop, and coordinate special STEM events/activities.
  • Collaborate with building teachers on cross content STEM initiatives and curriculum.
  • Research and provide input on resources, options and innovations that will optimize STEM learning experiences for students.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction, by using a variety of styles, and inspire mixed culture and ability classes by creating challenging and engaging learning opportunities for all students.
  • Proven ability to apply science and/or math content knowledge, formative assessment, and technology integration at a high level.
  • Deep understanding of student learning theory, brain based learning, and differentiated instruction.
  • A proven track record in the use of a rich array of instructional methods, the analysis and use of data and technology to improve instruction, and the ability to build professional relationships, solve problems, and plan collaboratively.
  • Understanding of Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS), Michigan Computer Science Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
  • Proven ability to collaborate with teachers regarding student learning.
  • Desire to continue learning "what works" in classroom instruction.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Experience with project based learning and extensively focusing on hands on learning activities.
  • Evidence of planning, organization, and time management skills that will bring structure and accountability to the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate.
  • Bachelor's in one or more STEM discipline(s) or STEM related field preferred. Master's degree preferred.
  • Evidence of at least three (3) years of classroom teaching experience.
