EHS Manager Job Overview A leading Tier 1 Contractor is seeking an experienced EHS Manager to join the senior project leadership team on a major hyperscale data centre development in Blyth, Northumberland.

The EHS Manager will lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the project's Environmental, Health and Safety strategy. You will manage the site-based EHS team and provide clear direction to construction management, engineering teams, specialist subcontractors and supply chain partners.

Working closely with the Project Director, Regional EHS Manager, client representatives and project stakeholders, you will ensure that all CSA, mechanical, electrical and commissioning activities are planned and delivered in accordance with company procedures, client standards and applicable UK legislation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an EHS Manager, HSE Manager or Health and Safety Manager looking to lead EHS delivery on one of the UK's most significant mission critical construction projects.

EHS Strategy and Leadership

• Lead the implementation of the project Environmental, Health and Safety strategy.
• Develop and maintain the project EHS plan in alignment with company and client requirements.
• Provide visible EHS leadership across all construction, testing and commissioning activities.
• Establish clear EHS objectives, priorities and performance expectations.
• Promote a proactive, positive and inclusive safety culture throughout the project.
• Advise the Project Director and senior management team on EHS risks and strategic priorities.
• Ensure EHS considerations are incorporated into project planning and decision making.
• Challenge unsafe practices and ensure appropriate corrective measures are implemented.
• Promote accountability for EHS performance at every level of the project.
• Act as the senior point of contact for all project EHS matters.

EHS Team Management

• Lead, manage and develop the project EHS team.
• Establish clear roles, responsibilities and reporting arrangements for EHS personnel.
• Allocate resources to provide suitable EHS coverage across all project areas and shifts.
• Set objectives and monitor the performance of EHS Leads, EHS Advisors and support personnel.
• Review the quality and consistency of inspections, audits, investigations and reports.
• Provide coaching, mentoring and technical guidance to EHS team members.
• Identify training and development requirements within the EHS function.
• Lead regular EHS team meetings and communicate project priorities.
• Support the recruitment, onboarding and retention of EHS personnel.
• Promote a collaborative and consistent approach to EHS management.

Legislative and Management System Compliance

• Ensure project activities comply with applicable UK health and safety and environmental legislation.
• Oversee compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
• Develop and maintain the Construction Phase Plan and supporting documentation.
• Implement company EHS policies, standards and management system requirements.
• Support compliance with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
• Monitor changes in legislation, industry guidance and client standards.
• Ensure statutory inspections, registers, licences and certifications remain current.
• Maintain accurate and auditable records of project EHS activities.
• Coordinate responses to regulatory, client and certification body requirements.
• Escalate significant compliance issues to senior project and regional management.

Risk Management and Work Planning

• Ensure suitable risk management processes are embedded throughout the project.
• Oversee the review and approval of risk assessments and method statements.
• Ensure RAMS are task specific, technically appropriate and communicated to the workforce.
• Lead EHS input into construction sequencing, logistics and commissioning plans.
• Chair or participate in reviews for complex and high risk activities.
• Ensure changes in design, scope or methodology trigger appropriate risk reviews.
• Monitor permit to work, isolation and lockout/tagout systems.
• Review lifting plans, temporary works and specialist construction methodologies.
• Ensure risks are eliminated or reduced as far as reasonably practicable.
• Maintain oversight of project level EHS risks and associated mitigation measures.

High Risk Construction and Commissioning

• Establish appropriate controls for working at height, lifting operations, excavation and confined space entry.
• Oversee electrical safety, temporary power, energisation and controlled access arrangements.
• Ensure robust procedures are in place for hot works, pressure testing and system commissioning.
• Monitor controls for mobile plant, traffic management and material handling.
• Ensure suitable arrangements are implemented for heavy equipment installation and abnormal loads.
• Review controls associated with simultaneous operations and changing site conditions.
• Coordinate EHS planning for factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing and integrated systems testing.
• Ensure suitable emergency and rescue arrangements are in place for high risk work.
• Provide senior EHS oversight during critical project activities.
• Stop or suspend work where there is an immediate or unacceptable risk.

Subcontractor and Supply Chain Management

• Establish minimum EHS requirements for subcontractors and supply chain partners.
• Review subcontractor EHS competency and documentation before appointment and mobilisation.
• Participate in pre qualification, mobilisation and package kick off meetings.
• Ensure subcontractors provide suitably qualified and experienced EHS resources.
• Monitor subcontractor compliance and performance throughout the project.
• Chair subcontractor EHS forums and performance review meetings.
• Establish corrective action plans where standards are not achieved.
• Escalate recurring or serious non compliance to project and commercial management.
• Incorporate EHS performance into subcontractor reviews and decision making.
• Promote collaboration and the sharing of best practice across the supply chain.

Site Inspections and Auditing

• Develop and implement the project EHS inspection and audit programme.
• Ensure regular site inspections, workplace observations and compliance audits are completed.
• Conduct senior management safety tours with project and client representatives.
• Review inspection findings and verify that corrective actions are properly closed.
• Analyse recurring observations and implement project wide improvement measures.
• Coordinate internal, client, corporate and external certification audits.
• Support visits or inspections by relevant authorities where required.
• Ensure audit findings are communicated clearly to responsible stakeholders.
• Maintain an effective action tracking and close out process.
• Report significant trends and non conformances to the project leadership team.

Incident Management and Investigation

• Establish and maintain effective incident reporting and investigation procedures.
• Lead the project response to serious accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental events.
• Ensure incidents are reported and escalated within the required timescales.
• Oversee investigations, root cause analysis and evidence gathering.
• Ensure corrective and preventive actions address underlying causes.
• Review and approve investigation reports before issue.
• Monitor investigation actions through to verified close out.
• Communicate safety alerts and lessons learned across the project.
