We are looking to expand our services with a Band 7Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Sonographer within Gynaecology.

The role will include working in our Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Unit and supporting our Early pregnancy and Gynaecology assessment unit.

Main duties of the job

To support the Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology department's provision of a professional extended 7-day ultrasound service.

The role of the post holder (Sonographer) is to perform and report independently on a wide range of Early pregnancy and Gynaecology ultrasound examinations.

As well as writing reports for the medical profession and keeping appropriate records, the Sonographer is required to communicate potentially distressing diagnoses directly to patients and refer these patients appropriately.

The maintenance of a high standard of patient care and medical ethics is essential.

The Sonographer is involved in the clinical training of ultrasound trainees and other medical personnel. They also supervise anyone working with them such as recently qualified sonographers and radiographic assistants.

Deliver a high standard of Nursing/ Sonography assessments without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base. Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate Sonography/Nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate. Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.

Manage a group of patients throughout a shift as delegated by the Lead Nurse

Working within the NMC and National Sonography Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one's own abilities and limitation.

Job responsibilities

To support the Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology departments provision of a professional extended 7-day ultrasound service.

The role of the post holder (Sonographer) is to perform and report independently on a wide range of Early pregnancy and Gynaecology ultrasound examinations

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of nursing/ sonography care for early pregnancy and gynaecology patients as delegated by senior nursing staff, involving patients and carers, where appropriate.
  • Acts as a team leader, delegating appropriate tasks and supervising the standard of care delivered by unqualified staff and learner nurses in the ward team.
  • Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.
  • Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient, where appropriate.
  • Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
  • Manage a group of patients throughout a shift as delegated by nurse in charge.
Person Specification Experience and Knowledge
  • Advanced technical knowledge related to the efficient use, safety and maintenance of ultrasound equipment.
  • Ability to use the Imaging IT systems.
  • Well-developed specialist knowledge which is underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
  • Knowledge of administrative practices.
  • Expected to work towards Master's level ultrasound qualification plus extensive.
Qualification(s) and Professional Training
  • DCR (R)/BSc/DMU/PGD or MSC in Medical, Early pregnancy, Gynaecology Ultrasound.
  • Registration with Health Professions Council. (HPC) - Radiographer.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate highly sensitive complex information relating to pregnancy loss or abnormality or the patient's medical condition with empathy and reassurance.
Personal Qualities
  • On a daily basis need to cope with highly distressing, emotional circumstances - giving bad news to patients/relatives and coping with their reactions.
  • Ability to be able to support other staff members.
Other
  • Need to be able to work in adverse conditions, sometimes in a hot confined area in half-light, often under severe pressure and to be able to manage their workload though various distractions i.e. doctors requiring urgent scans and urgent telephone calls.
