Job Description

The Money Advice Team is a welfare and benefits service that assists in identifying financial support, grants and discounts and offering advice for dealing with debt. The Disability and Benefits Support Team is a project within the Money Advice Team that specialises in focused support for those eligible for Disability Benefits. This project has been growing in success over the last two years and is looking to expand.

About the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed individual with excellent customer care skills and knowledge of Disability Benefits to join the Money Advice Team as an Appeals Officer. The successful candidate will help individuals and families with claims for disability benefits and carers allowance, including appeals for declined applications all the way to Tribunal stage. These services are delivered in person, by telephone or in writing.

What We Are Looking For From You

The successful applicant must have good knowledge of disability benefits, primarily Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) together with Carers Allowance. Experience in completing initial applications and dealing with Mandatory Reconsiderations is required. Training will be offered for cases that reach Tribunal stage. The applicant should also know welfare benefits in order to identify any other support which may be available, such as grants and discounts. Knowledge of alternative schemes and projects available to offer additional support would be desirable.

The role of the adviser also includes identifying any further support that the parties need. This could include referrals or signposting to services that improve financial and well being status.

  • Referrals to teams within Cardiff Council for help with child services
  • Or any other internal or external services which can improve the financial and wellbeing status of those parties
