Job Description

The Money Advice Team is a welfare and benefits service that assists in identifying financial support, grants and discounts and offering advice for dealing with debt. The Disability and Benefits Support Team is a project within the Money Advice Team that specialises in focused support for those eligible for Disability Benefits. This project has been growing in success over the last two years and is looking to expand.

About the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed individual with excellent customer care skills and knowledge of Disability Benefits to join the Money Advice Team as an Appeals Officer. The successful candidate will help individuals and families with claims for disability benefits and carers allowance, including appeals for declined applications all the way to Tribunal stage. These services are to be delivered in person, telephone or in writing.

What We Are Looking For From You

The successful applicant will have good knowledge of disability benefits, primarily Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) together with Carers Allowance. You will also have experience in completing initial applications and dealing with Mandatory Reconsiderations. Training will be offered for cases which are taken to Tribunal stage.

The successful candidate will also need knowledge on welfare benefits in order to identify any other support which may be available as well as grants and discounts. Knowledge of alternative schemes and projects available to offer additional support would be desirable.

The role of the adviser will also be to identify any further support that the parties need. This could include identifying any referrals or signposting that might be needed such as;

  • Referrals to the Money Advice Team for help with debts
  • Referrals to the Into Work Advice Service for help with employability
  • Referrals to teams within Cardiff Council for help with child services
  • or any other internal or external services which can improve the financial and wellbeing status of those parties

This post is temporary until 31st March 2027.

Internal candidates who wish to apply for this position on a secondment basis must obtain approval prior to application using Form SEC1 (4.C.081). Requests may only be approved by the relevant Director/ Assistant Director/ Chief Officer or senior nominated officer graded no lower than OM2 or in the case of schools-based staff the Headteacher / Governing Body.

The ability to speak other languages in particular Welsh, Somali, Arabic or Polish would be an advantage.
