Great ideas come from different minds. That's why we bring together engineers, scientists, analysts, and creatives from every background - and give them the trust, tools, and freedom to make a difference. What connects us is the mission: solving meaningful problems and building capability that protects what matters most.

And as the challenges evolve, so do we - working on the technologies that will shape tomorrow, not just today.

At Roke

Roke imagines a more secure world where technology protects, where engineers, consultants and business staff collaborate to protect what matters most to our clients.

Roke is a leader in the development of cutting edge technology solutions for the defence industry with clients spanning National Security, Defence and Intelligence areas. We work alongside our customers to solve their complex and unique challenges.

The Opportunity

Roke is seeking a Digital Design Engineer to provide innovative, compact, high performance and power efficient digital subsystem platform components for a variety of developments in the domains of Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT), RF communication and sensors. This senior engineering role combines hands on detailed design with technical team leadership.

You will contribute innovation to and take ownership of bespoke digital sub system designs that will provide the platforms for cutting edge electronics for defence and robust position, navigation and timing (RPNT) systems. You will use your design and simulation skills in projects from prototypes for urgent requirements at low TRL to development of new Roke EW products. Specific technology domains will include communication systems, radar systems, ground search systems, GNSS anti jam and anti spoof technologies such as array based directional antenna systems and extended long range navigation (eLORAN) systems.

You will join stimulating, collaborative and driven teams that offer you autonomy, challenge, and strong sense of purpose. In addition to your technical responsibilities there will be opportunities for leadership within the teams and in client engagements, in the initial discussions of requirements through technology demonstrations to customer acceptance test, delivery and support. The role may give the opportunity to work on client site, from the office, in shared workspaces or from home as necessary.

Job Purpose & Key Responsibilities

As a Digital Design Engineer your responsibilities could include:

  • Implementation of SoA processor, FPGA and comms devices in innovative, compact, high performance and power efficient digital subsystem platforms all EW domains.
  • Implementation of platform communications and digital and analogue I/O circuits.
  • Design of processor or FPGA support functions such as power and battery management systems, user interface hardware, fault monitoring and self test.
  • Capture of digital subsystem requirements, digital circuit design and test/verification processes from R&D concept through to the full product development lifecycle.
  • Design of digital system manufacturing test jigs.
  • Design for reliability to include failure mode analysis and operation under environmental factors such as temperature and vibration.
  • Rapid prototyping for UOR requirements.
Essential skills will include
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Requirements definition and design, simulation, implementation and test of digital electronic circuits and systems tailored for RPNT applications and defence related projects (incl rapid prototyping for UOR requirements).
  • Technical input in design reviews to enhance project outcomes.
  • Hands on integration, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging of digital and analogue designs to optimise their performance.
Ideally you will have experience in some of the following
  • Design and development of microprocessor, FPGA based systems, power supply and battery management systems (incl of analogue I/O aspects).
  • Technology for alternative navigation systems, GNSS anti jam and anti spoof technologies such as array based directional antenna systems and eLORAN systems.
  • Design for safety, reliability, repeatability and obsolescence management through volume manufacture and compliance to industry standards.
