Job Description Design Team Lead

Here at KDC we require a Design Team Lead with the aptitude to perform a team lead role and a hands on mechanical design role within the Space sector across the following roles and responsibilities:

  • To lead and manage a team of Design Engineers in delivering design based work packages to time, cost and quality.
  • Creating and updating 3d models and 2d drawings
  • Organising and maintaining the 3d DMU working environment.
  • General dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Production and configuration of IRDs and ICDs.
  • Clash detection analysis and reporting
  • Creating mass and inertia analysis reports
  • Production of detailed design manufacturing drawings and assemblies following the applicable Design for Manufacture processes and guidelines to minimise cost.
  • Full adherence to Quality processes to perform check and validation against established check lists
  • Team competency and performance management including allocation of tasks to appropriate team members.
  • Manage and provide technical guidance to the team ensuring they perform the tasks assigned to them to the highest technical standard, in a timely manner and within the prescribed budget.
  • Point of contact to the customer Technical and Project team from task scoping, project launch and progression through to delivery.
  • Working with the Operations and Project Management team in managing and maintaining project risk and dependency trackers.
  • Working with the Engineering Director to ensure adequate and suitably capable resources are available to meet the current and planned customer requirements.
  • SoW compilation reflecting verbal or written customer requests for approval by Engineering and Operations.
  • Internal status reporting on work complete, budget, enablement etc, ensuring any matters arising which may affect quality, on-time delivery or technical compliance are raised to the Operations and Engineering leadership team.
  • Provide design input to and attend customer programme meetings, ie Technical Review Meetings, PDR & CDR etc.
  • Develop customer relationships identifying potential areas of support and responding proactively and positively to all enquiries.

Essential skills and experience:
  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical / Aeronautical Engineering or similar, or demonstrable relevant experience in lieu thereof.
  • Proven track record of team leadership and technical management.
  • Excellent Catia experience, especially with v6/3dx.
  • Demonstrable structural design experience with Space or Aero industries.
  • Experience of working directly with customer technical leadership teams.
  • Windchill.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and propose innovative solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to articulate project progress to Operations Manager.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines on projects and interfacing with clients.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk and dependency management
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good estimating skills.
  • Resource management.
  • Quick learner and highly self-motivated.
  • Commercial awareness and discretion.
