Job Description
Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse Paediatric Renal and Urology

Closing date: 26 February 2026.

E17 is a 10 bedded ward specialising in Paediatric Renal and Urology, part of Nottingham Children's Hospital, the first Children's Hospital in Europe to be accredited by the Pathway to Excellence of the American Nurses Credentialing Centre.

We have two posts available - 1.6 WTE each.

You must be an RSCN or RN Child qualified nurse with substantial experience working in a Children's Hospital setting as a Band 5 or Band 6 nurse.

You must be able to lead a team, demonstrating excellent organisational and clinical skills.

You will be expected to co ordinate care on the ward and deputise and support the Ward Manager. We are committed to supporting you and offer various professional development opportunities to enhance your renal nursing skills and knowledge.

Main duties of the job

Ensure high quality, evidence based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings.

Ensure that patients have a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and the pathway of care.

Support the Ward Manager in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust's requirements to improve practice.

Act as a point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff, providing a resource for problems and needs and presenting the patient's view to others.

Support the Ward Manager in ensuring the development and ongoing management of work rosters that provide appropriate and safe staff cover.

Job responsibilities

Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring the development and ongoing management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff cover.

Encourage ward/department staff to be involved in the management of resources, by effective use of clinical and non clinical supplies and understanding of financial issues.

Contribute to the work of time limited committees and project groups.

Ensure that, where applicable, information is maintained and kept in an appropriate place and that accurate records are maintained and stored in accordance with Trust and national policy.

Be a major instrument of change within the clinical area in response to clinical incidents and/or demands.

Encourage a culture of learning where students receive quality clinical placements supported by mentorship, teaching and support from registered nurses.

Ensure that junior staff see this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non clinical governance within the ward or department.

Along with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, support the ward or department team in completing appropriate risk assessments and develop action plans accordingly to provide a safe environment for the delivery of high quality patient care.

Ensure that all nursing documentation is regularly and appropriately reviewed and updated with changes implemented.

Continue professional development appropriate to the field of practice and develop competency in line with agreed personal development plans, including leadership skills, and empower other members of ward teams.

Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring that best practice undertaken is shared with colleagues in the directorate, division and the Trust.

Help staff use clinical information within the ward or department to help improve the quality of patient care, encouraging involvement in service changes and developments using processes defined within the directorate/division.

Demonstrate clear lines of communication within a defined clinical area which result in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi professional team.

Create a culture where staff have appropriate authority over issues that contribute to the provision of essential care and enable them to secure and achieve the highest quality standards.

Assist in the establishment, motivation and development of the clinical team with a clear focus and direction. Ensure that the clinical team is kept informed of the policies, direction and strategy of the directorate and division.

Person Specification Communication and relationship
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate basic IT skills
  • Effective communication with patients, carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Can produce timely, accurate written/electronic records/documents
  • Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team
Training and Qualification
  • Diploma or working towards a degree
  • Evidence of performance reviews
  • EPALS/ APLS or willing to complete on next available course
  • A Degree in Children's Nursing
  • Formal leadership and management training
Experience
  • Has had experience of being the Nurse in Charge
  • Evidence of Mentorship or SSSA
  • Evidence of doing a link role
  • Evidence of working beyond registration
  • Experience of working with renal patients
  • Demonstrated experience of teaching one to one and small groups
  • Experience in audit/research
  • Demonstrates experience of supporting change into clinical practice
