Job overview The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital is located on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site in Brighton. We are a 12 bedded Children's Surgical Unit, where we care for both medical and surgical patients. Surgical patients often require complex care including - TPN, Stoma cares, NCA/PCA and wound management.
This is your opportunity to work within the Children's Surgical Ward, you will be responsible for the shift by shift running of the unit whilst providing excellent nursing care. You will work closely with the Ward Manager and other senior nurses within the Children's Hospital.
We are looking for enthusiastic, dynamic, energetic children's nurse with a skill for prioritising, delivering and organising patient care. You will have a proactive and positive approach, with evidence of excellent clinical, teaching, and managerial and inter- personal skills to lead, work along side and motivate our multi-disciplinary team. Your will be supported by our surgical educator.
Given the focus of this post, it is essential that you are a registered children's nurse that has experience of caring for surgical patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital is located on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site in Brighton. In June 2007 RACH opened on the current site in its brand new state of the art facility. It has won an international design award and continues with offering pioneering children's care.
The RACH has a long history of progressive and innovative Children's care embracing medicine, nursing and related professions, children's nurse training and research. It is one is of the leading children's centre's on the South Coast and has a 24 hour dedicated children's emergency department. RACH works closely with the neonatal service providing support and services for neonates such as surgery. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated team player to join our dynamic paediatric Surgical department.
Our Surgical ward is a busy unit which cares for children and babies from 0-16 years old. These children have had/ are going to have surgery or investigations and treatment of surgical conditions from a wide range of specialities.

- As a member of the multi-disciplinary team provides the highest standard of patient care.
- Contributes to the smooth and efficient running of the Unit over a 24-hour period.
- Prioritises care and delegates duties to others as appropriate ensuring they are supervised and mentored.
- Continues to develop own knowledge and skills through locally agreed personal development plans and facilitates the development of others.
- Participates in change management and clinical audit within own area of work.
- Works in partnership with other agencies.
- Participates in daily nursing bleep-holder rota for children's services
- Take part in and leads shift handovers ensuring relevant detail is communicated to the team.
- Recognise when own and other's (staff, children and carers) behaviour is not acceptable and take action to address this effectively

- RN Child Registration + experience
- Knowledge of Band 6 role
- Surgical Experience
- IV Drug Administration
- Basic computer skills
- Able to communicate using verbal and written skills
- Knowledge of Child Protection Procedures Ability to use initiative Ability to calculate complex drug dosages
- Understanding of Accountability and Responsibilities
- PILS EPLS or APLS
- Venepuncture and Cannulation
- Knowledge and experience of NHS IT systems /applications
- Evidence of professional development since qualification
