Job Description
Dental Officer in Oral Surgery

The closing date is 20 May 2026

An exciting opportunity to join the Salaried Dental Service Oral Surgery Team, carrying out Tier 2 level procedures within Cheshire and Merseyside. The post holder will support the Clinical Director and Oral surgery lead in the delivery of minor oral surgery contracts for patients referred from local dental practitioners and work alongside Senior dental officers and specialists for mentoring.

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will provide tier 2 outpatient minor oral surgery at clinic sites across Cheshire and Merseyside (Warrington, Halton & St Helens, Western Cheshire, Vale Royal and Sandbach) as required by service need. Treatment types include:

  • Extraction of single and multi-rooted erupted teeth beyond the skill level of a general dentist
  • Removal of buried roots and fractured or residual root fragments
  • Routine third molar surgery/removal of simple impacted teeth
  • Management of acute infection

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing advice and assistance to other staff and referring practitioners
  • Liaising with existing specialist senior dental officers on case management and service development, including best practice implementation within Clinical Networks
  • Completing FP17 forms and determining treatment banding
  • Ensuring referrers receive adequate feedback after case assessment and treatment
  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes, clinical governance, peer review and audit
  • Maintaining high standard patient records in accordance with organisational policies and local arrangements
  • Undertaking any other duties within the framework of the post
Person Specification Experience
  • Provision of routine exodontia for adults and children
  • Experience of working in an oral surgery department
Relationships

Skills and Attributes
  • Able to carry out routine exodontia and minor oral surgery to a high standard
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to manage own workload
  • Basic IT skills
  • Knowledge of professional standards
  • Ability to work as a member of a large team
  • Ability to use electronic dental patient records system
  • Knowledge of FP17s, treatment banding and patient charges
  • Use of Dentally dental software

Qualifications
  • BDS or equivalent
  • Full GDC registration
  • Certificate / Diploma in conscious sedation or equivalent
  • NHS performer number
  • Accreditation in oral surgery
