The Data Mapping Lead is a senior role within a data migration and transformation programme, accountable for defining, owning, and governing the enterprise-wide data mapping specification that acts as the golden source for all data migrations across the organisation.
This is not a delivery or development role. It is the authoritative ownership of the Mapping Specification-the single artefact used by:
Developers to build migration and transformation logic
Business teams to define data rules and outcomes
Testing teams to validate data integrity, completeness, and correctness
The specification will evolve through analysis, build, test, and remediation cycles prior to sign-off. The Data Mapping Lead ensures clarity, consistency, traceability, and governance throughout, acting as the bridge between business, IT, data, and engineering teams.
The role suits a financial services data professional experienced in complex Legacy estates, regulatory constraints, and core banking transformations (eg Avaloq or equivalent).
The role:
Data Mapping Ownership & Governance
Own the end-to-end creation, maintenance, and approval of detailed data mapping specifications.
Establish and enforce the Mapping Specification as the golden source for all migration activity.
Ensure mappings are consistent, version-controlled, auditable, and regulator-ready.
Define standards for documentation, naming conventions, and traceability.
Data Blueprint & Golden Source Definition
Partner with application owners and data SMEs to identify authoritative systems for key data domains (customer, account, product, reference data).
Resolve conflicts across overlapping or inconsistent data sources.
Define rules for data precedence, survivorship, and consolidation.
Data Transformation & Rules Definition
Define field-to-field mappings from Legacy to target platforms (eg Avaloq).
Specify transformation, enrichment, derivation, and defaulting rules.
Address complex FS scenarios including multi-currency, account hierarchies, historical data, and regulatory requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement & Decision Facilitation
Facilitate structured workshops with business SMEs, IT owners, architects, developers, and test leads.
Drive decisions where data definitions or requirements are ambiguous.
Act as the authority on data interpretation and mapping intent.
Iteration, Testing & Change Management
Maintain mappings as a living artefact through SIT, UAT, reconciliation, and defect remediation cycles.
Work closely with testing teams to ensure mappings are testable and traceable to outcomes.
Key Skills and Experience:
To succeed in this role you will need:
Proven experience in data migration, data mapping, or data analysis within financial services.
Strong understanding of data structures, relational models, and Legacy-to-target migrations.
Demonstrated ability to produce detailed, developer-ready mapping specifications.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills; able to challenge and drive decisions.
Highly organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with granular data in regulated environments.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience with Avaloq or other core banking platforms (Temenos, Finacle).
Banking domain experience (retail/private banking, wealth, payments, securities).
Familiarity with data quality, reconciliation, and migration testing approaches.
