Job Title: Data Centre Technician

Job Description

This role supports data centre decommissioning activities under the guidance of Full time operations staff. You will safely remove and process Servers, storage devices, and related IT equipment, ensuring accurate asset tracking and adherence to strict safety and data handling procedures. The position suits someone who is practical, detail-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, operational environment.


Responsibilities
  • Support data centre decommissioning activities under the direction of Full time operations staff.
  • Physically remove Servers, storage devices, and other IT hardware from racks in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Safely disconnect power and data cabling from equipment and racks, following established cabling and electrical guidelines.
  • Label and scan assets using barcode scanners or asset tracking tools to maintain accurate records.
  • Stage equipment and components for collection, reuse, or secure disposal in line with data handling policies.
  • Assist with rack cleanup, including removing cabling and accessories, to prepare the site for new deployments.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts and chain-of-custody records throughout the decommissioning process.
  • Follow structured work instructions precisely and report any issues or discrepancies to on-site operations teams.
  • Coordinate effectively with on-site operations staff, providing clear updates on task progress and completion.
  • Adhere to all established safety procedures and data handling policies at all times.
Essential Skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to coordinate effectively with on-site operations teams.
  • Practical experience working with IT hardware, including Servers, storage devices, and related components.
  • Familiarity with server components, basic rack systems, and common cable types.
  • Ability to use barcode scanners or asset tracking tools to label, scan, and record equipment accurately.
  • Basic computer literacy for following digital work instructions and updating records.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate inventory, labelling, and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Ability to follow and execute structured work instructions with high accuracy.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-volume operational environment.
  • Understanding of basic cabling design and safe handling of power and data cables.
  • Awareness of safe working practices around electrical and data equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a data centre, warehouse, or IT hardware environment.
  • Hands-on exposure to rack-mounted systems, Servers, and storage devices.
  • experience working with barcode scanners and other asset tracking technologies.
  • Ability to work methodically and maintain organisation in an operational or logistics setting.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and assets simultaneously.
