We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our customer-focused Bereavement Services team as a Crematorium and Cemeteries Officer.
This role is integral to the delivery of high-quality bereavement services across our borough, including Woodlands Cemetery and Crematorium, Robin Hood Cemetery and Crematorium, and Widney Manor Cemetery. We are seeking a professional who demonstrates empathy, a commitment to excellence in customer service, and the ability to work within a legislative framework.
As a Cemetery and Crematorium Officer you will be responsible for:
- Delivering all aspects of bereavement services, including burials, cremations, interment and scattering of cremated remains.
- Ensuring cremators and associated equipment are operational and prepared for daily use.
- Supporting non-statutory duties such as memorial installation, removal, and the return of memorials to bereaved families.
- Liaising with funeral directors, Ministers, memorial suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure services are delivered to a high standard and in accordance with legal requirements.
- Maintaining robust audit procedures to safeguard records and data.
- Keeping up to date with relevant legislation, industry regulations (Institute for Cemetery and Crematorium Management, regulations of Federation of Burial and Cremation Authority), internal processes and Council policies.
To succeed in the role, you will have:
- GCSEs in English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 or above.
- A willingness to undertake and successfully complete the Crematorium Operators Test (TEST scheme) or equivalent within 12 months.
- Experience in a customer-facing role with a strong focus on delivering high-quality service.
- The ability to interpret and apply legislation, regulations, and policies accurately.
- Initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- An understanding of bereavement and its impact, with the ability to manage sensitive and challenging situations.
- Previous experience working with bereaved families is desirable, though not essential.
This role requires flexibility to work shifts between 07:30 and 18:00, including occasional unsociable hours to meet service demands. There will be a requirement to be on a rota for weekend call to cover specific cultural burial requirements.
