Job Description

About the Role

InterQuest are looking for an experienced Buy-to-Let Underwriter to join a collaborative and fast-growing challenger bank focused on empowering SMEs and intermediaries through innovative lending solutions. In this role, you'll work closely with teams across Product, Risk, and Operations to assess and underwrite a diverse range of BTL applications - including portfolio landlords, complex properties, and corporate structures.

As part of a small and ambitious team, you'll play a key role in shaping the Bank's growing BTL proposition by bringing insight, commerciality, and a risk-aware mindset to each lending decision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess new lending applications against risk appetite and policy, preparing detailed underwriting notes and making timely credit decisions within your delegated authority.
  • Communicate outcomes clearly and constructively to internal stakeholders across Relationship Management and Operations.
  • Review documentation for completeness, compliance with credit policy, and regulatory alignment (including PRA and FCA standards).
  • Provide feedback and raise queries related to underwriting decisions, supporting intermediaries with clarity and professionalism.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of underwriting procedures, processes, and systems.
  • Support service excellence and adherence to SLAs and OKRs, identifying process improvement opportunities from a customer and internal perspective.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong experience underwriting both simple and complex BTL loans, including for HMO/MUB properties and limited company structures.
  • Currently hold a Delegated Lending Authority of at least £1,200,000.
  • Confident in manual underwriting across various BTL asset classes.
  • In-depth understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements within a UK banking environment.
  • Excellent analytical, risk assessment, and decision-making skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative, communicative, and eager to contribute to a customer-first culture.
  • Proficient with Excel and confident managing time and competing priorities effectively.
