Consultant Secretary - Trauma and Orthopaedics

Overview

An exciting opportunity for a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Secretary to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate at University Hospitals Dorset (UHD). Trauma and Orthopaedics is a large, well established service. Trauma and paediatric orthopaedic surgery is currently undertaken on the Poole Site, home to the largest fragility fracture centre in Europe with over 1200 patients attending per year requiring Neck of Femur surgery and a trauma bed base of over 100 beds.

The closing date is 14 October 2025

Base Location: Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth Hospital (Cross site working will be part of transformation of department)

Main duties of the job
  • Reporting to the Rota and Staffing Manager, the role comprises of providing a full and comprehensive secretarial service to the trauma and orthopaedic consultants and their medical teams.

Poole until site swap when trauma will move to RBH

Please note if the role or service is relocated as part of a planned move, employees will not be eligible for excess mileage reimbursement. Travel from the postholder's home to the new work base will be considered a normal commute. Any other changes not related to this relocation will be managed according to the relevant Trust or National terms and conditions.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Vocational level 3 in Administration or equivalent level of experience
  • Medical terminology qualification
Experience
  • Experience in working as a medical secretary
  • Knowledge and experience of patient pathway and validation
  • Orthopaedic secretarial experience
  • Word processing experience
  • Accurate spelling and grammar
Knowledge
  • Medical audio typing
  • Understanding of secretarial procedures
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of local hospital systems eCaMIS and EPR
Other requirements specific to the role
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Able to organise own workload, managing competing demands on your time
Language Requirement
  • Able to speak English as necessary to undertake the role
Personal Attributes
  • Able to deal with sensitive issues with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues
  • Able to work well within a team
