Consultant Respiratory Physician with an interest in lung cancer

The closing date is 27 November 2025

This role is pending Royal College approval

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine.

The post offers an exciting opportunity for either a recently trained or established Respiratory Consultant with expertise or experience in lung cancer and pleural disease, to join our busy and visionary department within a newly appointed University Hospital.

The successful applicant will join five other Respiratory Consultants working within the lung cancer services. Pleural clinics are run by 2 Consultants and supported by a Pleural Specialist Nurse. Ultrasound is available in clinic, where on-the-spot diagnostic aspirations are performed.

Main duties of the job

Portsmouth is a training centre for medical thoracoscopy, with over 25 years experience and Video-thoracoscopy is performed by the respiratory physicians. There is also an IPC ambulatory chest drain service (for which we run nationally available training courses) and have recently started undertaking pleural biopsies. 3 dedicated ultrasound machines are used to facilitate all pleural procedures and to support diagnosis on the wards and in clinic, in addition to endobronchial ultrasound.

The successful applicant would also be expected to undertake inpatient work covering the three respiratory wards and respiratory high care unit along with undertaking reviews of respiratory patients on the admissions unit. Job plans will be negotiated with the successful applicant, but the expectation is that ward cover will be provided for 14 weeks of the year with additional sessions reviewing respiratory patients on the admissions unit.

They would also be expected to participate on the respiratory and general medical on call rotas which is currently 1:19. There is currently no commitment to the acute medical take, but this is a possibility moving forward. The successful applicant would undertake a range of duties including advice and guidance to both the community and the hospital along with delivering two outpatient clinics per week. The successful applicant would be involved in delivering respiratory procedures such as bronchoscopy and pleural procedures in their off-ward time. Each respiratory consultant provides weekend cover for 4 weekends per year plus an additional day for bank holiday cover.

Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust has many trainees, and the successful applicant would be expected to undertake supervision and education for members of the wider multidisciplinary team. This would be included in the time for supporting professional activities (SPA) for which there will be 2 session per week with 8 sessions delivering clinical care.
