The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with a sub-specialty interest in Sleep & Ventilation. This is a permanent, full-time role based at the Churchill Hospital and Horton Hospital sites, Oxford and Banbury, with involvement across OUH sites as required. The Trust is a large teaching hospital and a base for medical education, training and research.
Note: This post is advertised with a focus on Sleep & Ventilation within Respiratory Medicine. Prior dedicated experience in tertiary sleep and ventilation is not a prerequisite, and specialty training can be provided as needed.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder's duties are based across OUH sites, predominantly at the Churchill and Horton sites. There are a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) comprising a mix of 8.5 clinical PAs and 1.5 supporting PAs. Responsibilities include:
- Speciality work in respiratory sleep and ventilation, including diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnoea, hypoventilation and support of patients with respiratory muscle weakness.
- In-patient care at Horton Hospital within the Oak general ward and high-care unit (approximately 3 months per year).
- Contribution to general respiratory clinics and on-call commitments for acute general medicine at Horton.
- Willingness to work across all Trust locations as required.
There is a new service being developed to address healthcare inequality, with collaboration across OUH MDTs and partnership with primary and secondary care services.

Teaching, Research and GovernanceTeaching/Research: The post-holder will participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and clinical examinations. Contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan.
Clinical Governance, Audit and QI: Participation in clinical governance activities, audits, risk management and quality improvement as required by the Trust and external bodies.
Personal and Professional Development: Maintain up-to-date knowledge, participate in appraisal and revalidation, and undertake CME as appropriate. A mentor will be allocated.
Management: Work within the Trust's management policies, with appropriate resource planning and administrative duties for patient care and departmental operations. All staff share responsibility for risk management.
Health & Safety and Infection ControlResponsibilities include compliance with Health & Safety at Work Act and Trust policies. Infection control is a shared responsibility; staff must follow infection control policies and attend mandatory training. Reporting infections to Occupational Health when required.
- Decontaminate hands before and after patient contact.
- Attend mandatory infection control training.
- Report infections to Occupational Health as appropriate.
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT in Respiratory Medicine or GMC Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine; or CCT in GIM or GMC Specialist Register in GIM; or within six months of achieving CCTs at interview
- MD or PhD
- Strong leadership and communication skills for a consultant in a large teaching hospital
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent spoken and written English; experience in teaching
- Engagement in clinical governance, CPD and research
- Experience supervising junior researchers
- Diagnosis and management of sleep-related breathing disorders, hypoventilation and respiratory muscle weakness
- General respiratory outpatient experience
- Management of respiratory and general medical inpatients
- Bronchoscopy experience and care of acute respiratory in-patients; Level 1 TUS
- Independence in reporting sleep studies
- Experience in managing patients with ventilatory failure or neuromuscular disorders
- Full GMC Registration
- Ability to travel to the hospital sites
