Job Description
Consultant Psychiatrist within Intellectual Disabilities (9 PAs)

We areseeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to join the CommunityLearning Disabilities Team in Plymouth. This is a parttime post - 9 PAs,inclusive of on-call - that will work alongside the existing fulltimeConsultant. The post holder will be expected to participate in the consultanton-call rota, which is currently 1 in 14.

Main duties of the job

The Community Learning Disabilities Team is adynamic, enthusiastic team that is committed to improving the lives of peoplewith learning disabilities in Plymouth. The team is built on the vision toempower people with a learning disability to have a good quality of life andto value ourselves and the people we support.There is a single team for the city, delivering integrated health andsocial care, with a focus on evidence-based, high-quality care in the community.

Thepostholder will complement the established fulltime Consultant and form partof a well-developed and continually evolving Community Learning DisabilitiesTeam, supported by a full range of MDT professionals. The team regularly hostsboth core and higher psychiatry trainees.

Thesuccessful candidate will contribute to the senior leadership of the communityteam, including service development, quality improvement initiatives relevantto their clinical role, and teaching and training activities. There is also theopportunity to participate in research for those with an interest.

Based atWestbourne, Scott Business Park in Plymouth, the post holder will providespecialist psychiatric assessment, treatment, and ongoing care for adults witha learning disability living within the catchment area and eligible forcommunity services.

Person Specification Research, Communication, Interpersonal Skills, Management & Practical Requirements
  • Ability to apply evidence-based approach to management of clinical problems.
  • Ability to teach undergraduates and supervise resident doctors.
  • Ability to community with patients and staff, both orally and in writing, to a high standard.
  • Computer and IT skills.
  • Reliability.
  • Excellent team working skills.
  • Caring attitude to patients and relatives.
  • Advise on efficient running of the service.
  • Experience in Audit.
  • Sensitivity to the importance of considering a user's view in individual treatment plans and also service development.
  • Ability to access transport to undertake duties as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Eligibility for full registration with GMC with a licence to practice.
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in LD Psychiatry at the time of taking up the post (Specialist Registrars applying in advance must be within six months of their CCT at the point of being interviewed).
  • Eligibility for Section 12 and Approval Clinician Approval.
  • Extensive experience in LD Psychiatry.
  • Higher academic qualification (MSc, PhD or other relevant higher qualifications).
  • Specialist areas, e.g. expertise in the assessment of Autism and/or ADHD.
  • Qualification in teaching and learning.
Experience
  • Knowledge of Mental Health legislation.
  • Participation in Continual Professional Development.
  • Ability to offer expert psychiatric opinion on a full range of emergency and routine clinical situations.
  • Experience in community LD psychiatry.
  • Advanced communication skills / experience of making Reasonable Adjustments.
  • Strong track record of collaborative working (shared decision making; co-production; MDT working etc.)
