This post is for a Consultant Psychiatrist responsible for providing clinical input and leadership to Liaison Psychiatry for Working Age Adults based at Epsom General Hospital, working alongside a multidisciplinary team in line with New Ways of Working.

Epsom General Hospital is part of the Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, rated Good in the August 2023 CQC inspection. The liaison service for Epsom General Hospital provides care for patients aged 16 years to end of life, primarily covering Epsom, Leatherhead, and Banstead.

Main duties of the role

The Consultant will support staff in assessing, diagnosing, and managing referrals for working-age adults with mental health issues at Epsom General Hospital. They will provide medical expertise and support to hospital staff managing patients with functional and organic mental health problems.

The role includes supervising the clinical caseload of team members and trainees, facilitating appropriate interventions, discharge planning, and communication with Primary Care, CMHRS, or Inpatient Services.

Clinical work involves direct assessment and psychiatric treatment of patients or supervision of team members.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • GMC registration with a license to practice at appointment
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act (or within 6-12 months)
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within six months
  • Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, etc.)
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Knowledge of legislation, guidance, and clinical practice implications
  • Understanding of NHS strategic vision
  • Excellent clinical skills with bio-psycho-social perspective
  • Ability to manage complexity and uncertainty
  • Decision-making based on evidence and experience
