Main duties of the job

The role is an exciting opportunity for a medical oncologist with an interest and experience in Gastrointestinal and HPB cancers to join an innovative and dynamic team of consultants, specialty doctors and advanced nurse practitioners in the Medical Oncology Service at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) and Salisbury District Hospital (SDH).

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities

The principal duties of these posts will be to:

  • Be a member of the GI and HPB MDTs
  • Participate in the management of GI and HPB patients
  • Attend the GI and HPB MDT meetings
  • Share the GI and HPB patient referrals
  • Support the Patient Triggered Follow Up (PTFU) pathway
  • Provide medical oncology expertise to the GI and HPB services
  • Plan and supervise chemo/immunotherapy
  • Conduct on treatment review clinics
  • Supervise care of inpatients providing cross-cover for annual leave for other GI and HPB Consultants at UHS
  • Engage in peer review meetings
  • Participate in the recruitment and running of clinical trials

As a University Hospital:

All consultants are expected to actively participate in teaching and training of junior medical and nursing staff and allied health professionals

All consultants are expected to clinically supervise junior medical staff

Involvement in educational supervision is expected, subject to General Medical Council requirements

Active involvement in co-ordinating education and training within the department is also encouraged

What We're Looking For

We are looking for dynamic individuals who are keen to work with the team to develop the GI and HPB oncology services to provide world class care to our patients.

Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Broad experience in Medical Oncology
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience in the management upper and lower gastrointestinal cancers and HPB cancers
  • Recognised training in academic oncology with postgraduate qualification
  • CCT in Medical Oncology (or within 6 months of CCT date) or appropriate qualifications and experience to allow entry on to the Specialist Register
  • Significant experience in Oncology research
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Teaching experience
Aptitudes and skills
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Good clinical and interpersonal skills
  • Good team worker
  • Ability to manage staff and resources
  • IT Skills
  • Track record or research including presentation and/or publications
