Overview

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant in Interventional Chronic Pain to join its expert multidisciplinary team. This substantive post offers a unique opportunity to deliver specialist care within a nationally renowned centre of excellence. The role involves leading outpatient clinics, performing interventional procedures, participating in MDTs, and contributing to departmental governance, teaching, and research. Additionally, there are anaesthetic sessions working alongside our highly specialised and skilled surgeons.

You will work closely with a dedicated team including fellows, nurse specialists, therapists, and pharmacists, supported by robust administrative infrastructure. We are looking for someone who is passionate about innovation, education, and improving patient outcomes in chronic pain management.

Main duties

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Consultant in Interventional Chronic Pain to join our team. Based across our Stanmore and Bolsover Street sites, you'll play a key role in delivering care to patients with complex neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.

You'll lead outpatient clinics, perform advanced procedures, and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings. There is no on-call commitment currently with this role. This role is supported by a skilled team including fellows, nurse specialists, therapists, and pharmacists you'll help shape the future of pain management at RNOH.

Job responsibilities

As Consultant in Interventional Chronic Pain at RNOH, you will deliver expert care to patients with complex neuro-musculoskeletal conditions. Your role includes leading outpatient clinics, performing advanced pain procedures, and contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings. You'll actively participate in departmental management, clinical governance, and service development.

You'll support teaching and training and engage in research and audit activities. The post includes Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for education, appraisal, and quality improvement. With no on-call duties, you'll have flexibility to focus on clinical excellence and innovation.

Based at Stanmore, supported by a skilled team of fellows, nurse specialists, therapists, and pharmacists. The Trust encourages involvement in private practice and offers access to state-of-the-art facilities and academic partnerships with UCL.

Education, qualification and training
  • Basic medical qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
  • Specialist fellowship in pain management
  • Full GMC registration
  • Management experience - e.g. rota/leave coordinator
  • Evidence of undertaking research activities
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register with CCT or equivalent (proposed CCT/CESR date must be within 6 months of interview)
Quality Improvement
  • Knowledge and experience of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology / audit / service improvement work
Skills
  • Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively supervise junior medical staff
  • Track record of establishing and maintaining good working relationships with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues
  • Understanding of wellbeing
  • Experience in effectively delivering training / teaching nursing and medical staff
  • Experience in conflict management and able to motivate colleagues (medical and non-medical)
Knowledge
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance
  • Evidence of understanding the importance of GMC good medical practice and appraisal and revalidation.
