The Great Western Hospital is pleased to offer the opportunity for Stroke Medicine Consultants to join the existing team.
We welcome consultants from GIM, Stroke or Neurology backgrounds who are experienced in stroke medicine and are looking to start a career in a supportive and caring service, or to change to an exciting new role where they can make a real difference.
The successful candidate will work closely with the existing team of Consultants to contribute to the improvement of our stroke pathways and SSNAP performance, ensuring a first class service that places patients and their relatives at the heart of everything we do.
The Stroke/Neurology team is located in the Betjeman Centre on the ground floor of GWH. The department houses the outpatient clinic rooms, day hospital, therapy centre and consultant office spaces. A separate rehabilitation service for stroke, provided by SWICC, is also located on site.
Main duties of the jobThe duties outlined below are not definitive and may change in accordance with the service needs.
Clinical Duties- Multidisciplinary team working - key component of the Trust, involving regular MDT discussions.
- Providing evidence based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all associated administrative duties (with secretarial support).
- Developing subspecialty interests in line with the Division needs and Trust strategy.
- Teaching, examination and accreditation duties, and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
- Providing cover for Consultant colleagues during periods of leave, in accordance with Trust policy.
- Participating in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
- Managing suitable duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
- Participating in an out of hours Consultant rota, details in the job plan.
- Detailing other responsibilities for the patients under your care.

Job responsibilities - Management and LeadershipAll staff in each Division are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director, with overall responsibility for the Division services. Consultants are key members accountable for leading changes to improve the patient experience.
- Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior Member of the Division Management Team.
- Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, in line with Trust business plans.
- Ensure effective communication and staff involvement across the Division, supporting the Divisional Director.
- Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
- Assist in cost effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non pay items, within budgets.
- Operate within the Trust framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders and financial procedures.
- Supervise junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust wide teaching programmes.
- Investigate and report incidents, participating in clinical risk management.
- Embodied the STAR values and NHS Constitution principles to guide decisions.
- Fully registered with the GMC.
- Clinical training/experience equivalent to UK CCT.
- Expertise in all aspects of stroke medicine.
- Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrable multidisciplinary team leadership skills.
- Publications in peer reviewed journals.
