Job Description

Requiredto fill this new, 10 PA post within the Emergency Department at the Leeds GeneralInfirmary/St Jamess University Hospital.

We arelooking for a dynamic individual to join our team within the EmergencyDepartment at the Leeds General Infirmary and St Jamess UniversityHospital. The creation of the LeedsTeaching Hospitals Trust represents a unique opportunity for the city to becomehome to one of the leading health care institutions in the world, excelling inpatient care, teaching and research.

Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust has undertaken a major investment in its Emergency Medicineservices to provide specialist Consultant led trauma care at the Leeds GeneralInfirmary which has been designated a Major Trauma Centre, and a 24/7Consultant presence in the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Departments in Leeds have anexcellent reputation for quality, innovation and education. The EmergencyMedicine service treats in excess of 220,000 new patients per year. Acute services in Leeds have undergoneextensive reconfiguration to deliver trauma based services and paediatrics onthe LGI site and acute and elderly medicine at St Jamess. The EmergencyDepartments have undergone modifications to reflect these patient flows,including expansion of the Paediatric ED on the LGI site and Same Day EmergencyCare unit at St James Hospital. AllConsultants work across all areas of the Emergency Departments on both sites.

Main duties of the job

You should possess FRCEM (or FRCPCH or equivalent) (or equivalent) and should be included on the SpecialistRegister or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currentlywithin a training programme within the UK.In accordancewith the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctorsmust be on the Specialist Register.

The Trust iscommitted to providing sustainable consultant-delivered services to ensure thequality of the patient experience. Working patterns that provide senior coverthroughout 24 hours per day, seven days per week will therefore be required.Successful candidates will be expected to work with the Trust and itsconsultant staff to deliver service patterns and job plans that meet thisobjective.

Applicants should haveestablished skills in EmergencyMedicine and may have a subspecialty. A strongcommitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interestis desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

This post is for a 10 PAconsultant in Emergency Medicine. Applications are invited from candidates withwide experience in emergency medicine. Part time working will be considered.

The post holder will beresponsible for delivering care to Adults and Children within the EmergencyDepartments and an associated follow up clinic. Other important componentsinclude the supervision and training of Emergency Medicine trainees andsubspecialty trainees in Emergency Medicine based within the ED.

2.OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

2.1Todeliver care to patients with Urgent Care needs at SJUH / LGI

Contributeto Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

2.2Tolink with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams withinthe Urgent Care CSU and across the Trust

Contributeto Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

2.3 ED consultants are expected to work arota encompassing shifts covering the full 24/7 cycle with a specific PAquantum allocated dependent for each shift.

2.4 To contribute toresearch, teaching, and new developments within the Emergency Department. Thepost holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the currentclinical research programs on going in the department

Tosupport doctors in training within the department with respects to educationalsupervision and appraisal and to contribute to undergraduate teaching ofstudents in the University of Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Toprovide teaching in the Paediatric Emergency Department

Tosupport the Trust in its delivery of its core services, recognising theimportance of local and national standards, in particular delivery of the4-hour Emergency Care Standard.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD and /or PhD).
  • Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent.
Training, Research & Teaching
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine.
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Experience
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Emergency Medicine.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in complex cases.
  • Ability to take full and independent care of problems arising as emergencies within a teaching hospital context.
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a clinical shift in a major Emergency Department. Able to provide supervision and support to junior medical staff.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own service workload.
  • Special interest in:
  • -Academic Research
  • -Observational Medicine
  • Or other areas deemed to be of benefit to LTHT
  • Demonstrate higher training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
