Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Areyou looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity to contribute to aleading tertiary centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology? Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant initially for 6 months inDiabetes and Endocrinology to join our friendly and expert team. As part of adepartment that provides specialist and regional services to a population farbeyond Leeds, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality careacross a range of complex conditions.

Main duties of the job

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs (including 1.5 SPAs) supporting the Diabetes andEndocrinology team. The post holder will :

Provide out-patient clinics indiabetes and endocrinology, as per departmental requirements.

Contribute to specialistmulti-disciplinary team meetings where appropriate

Contribute to the care of generalmedical in-patients. The post-holder will form part of a rota whereby they willbe working on the ward for 1 week, and then off the wards for 8 weeks, withon-call weekends.

Contribute to primary care advice andguidance

Contribute to supervision and supportof specialist registrars and specialist nurses

Applicants must be able todemonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspectsof diabetes. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strongcommitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Thesuccessful applicants should hold accreditation in Membership of the RoyalCollege of Physicians or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register.

About us

Thedepartment is centralised in the Leeds Centre for Diabetes & Endocrinology,located in the Beckett Wing at St Jamess University Hospital. Diabetes clinicsare hosted within the ground floor of this centre, while most endocrinologyclinics operate in a dedicated outpatient suite and day-case unit on BeckettWings first floor. Multidisciplinary clinics for thyroid cancer,neuroendocrine tumors, and endocrine late effects of cancer are held in theLeeds Cancer Centre (Bexley Wing). Antenatal diabetes and endocrine clinics arebased in the Maternity Unit (Gledhow Wing).

Consultantsin diabetes and endocrinology contribute to general medical care for inpatientson Ward J26 in the Chancellor Wing at St Jamess University Hospital on a 1 in9 basis. They also participate in the acute medical take, currently on a 1 in17 basis on weekends. Acute medical wards (J27 and J28) are also based in theChancellor Wing.

Person Specification Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Experience
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in endocrinology & diabetes and relevant sub-specialities.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Qualifications
  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.

  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
  • Service Development Experience.
  • Attendance on a recognised management course.
