Role and contract

Consultant in Anaesthesia with an interest in Specialist Surgery. NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant. Contract: Permanent, full-time - 10 sessions per week (10 PA's). Job ref 321-MS-CON S5. Site: John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Salary: £109,725 - £145,478 per annum. Salary period: Yearly. Closing: 28/10/:59.

The post is a replacement following retirements and would suit anaesthetists seeking a consultant career in a major teaching hospital with considerable expertise in major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is one of the largest departments in the country and provides a comprehensive elective and emergency service for a wide range of surgical and diagnostic specialties.

Main duties

The focus of the post is the delivery of high-quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. There are flexible sessions allowing the post-holder to maintain interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours on-call arrangements provide emergency cover for general surgery, trauma, specialist surgery including vascular procedures, plastics, ENT, stroke thrombectomy and transplantation depending on specialist interests and clinical experience.

Clinical governance and development

The post-holders will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, risk management, quality improvement and external accreditation as required by the Trust and other bodies. They will keep up-to-date with their practice through appraisal and may have access to professional development leave in line with Trust policy.

Person specification Qualifications/Training
  • Medical degree; FRCA or equivalent
  • CCT in Anaesthesia (or within 6 months at interview) or equivalent; advanced training or fellowship in the sub-specialist area
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS provider
Experience
  • Ability to work independently at consultant level and as part of a team
  • Ability to make decisions at consultant level and manage complex clinical problems
  • Advanced training or fellowship or experience in sub-specialist area
  • Additional training in other relevant sub-specialties
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
Skills and knowledge
  • Excellent leadership and teamwork in a teaching hospital setting
  • Administrative and time management skills
  • Knowledge of the NHS and the role of Clinical Networks
  • Understanding of working in a regional referral centre
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in teaching and training
