Job Description
Clinical Validation Clinician - Nurse

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting Adult Nurses (NMC registered) to work as members of the Clinical Validation Team in the Integrated Emergency Operations Centre. You will facilitate safe clinical triage of 999 calls using NHSP pathways and PaCCs, and provide specialist advice to call assessors and operational crews.

Applicants must hold an NMC (Adult Nursing) registration and have a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience.

Both full time and part time positions are available. All candidates must be able to work full rotating shift patterns (days, nights, evenings, weekends, RAL). Minimum part time work is 22.5 hours per week.

Training takes place on a full time basis for 4 weeks, followed by mentoring shifts. Part time applicants must be willing to commit to this training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safe clinical triage of 999 calls using NHSP pathways and PaCCs.
  • Provide advice and support to meet patient needs and initiate onward referrals (DoS/electronic referral).
  • Use AccuRx video consultation during triage decisions.
  • Identify and address risks, including safeguarding referrals.
  • Work independently and manage workload, risk assessment and management, acting within professional codes and guidelines.
  • Report issues to the Clinical Navigator and maintain accurate consultation records in line with NMC/HCPC standards.
  • Support and mentor new or less qualified staff while retaining full clinical responsibility.
  • Carry out audit activities to improve service quality and promote evidence based practice.
  • Use effective communication across telephone, email, CAD Portal and report writing.
  • Facilitate patient pathways through primary, community, secondary and tertiary care.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements.
  • Contribute to the team's communication, networking and service development initiatives.
  • Support new staff, participate in supervision, teaching and mentorship programmes.
  • Adhere to organisational policies, health & safety and clinical governance frameworks.
  • Carry out all duties with a person centred approach, considering cultural, social and economic factors.
  • Participate in audits, incident investigations, complaint management and customer satisfaction programmes.
  • Promote clinical excellence and best evidence practice.
  • Maintain HCPC/NMC registration and undertake CPD to meet professional requirements.
Additional Requirements & Commitments
  • Comprehensive training: NHSP course, cleric workshop, PaCCs training, and mandatory operational updates.
  • Active participation in annual reviews, performance reviews and service improvement meetings.
  • Compliance with enhanced DBS checks (paying £55.76 if required).
  • Willingness to attend assessments or interviews if you have a disability or learning difficulty.

Person Specification Skills and Knowledge
  • Commitment to full rotating shifts (days, nights, evenings, weekends, RAL).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent clinical knowledge and advanced patient assessment skills.
Experience
  • Autonomous experience delivering nurse care within emergency and urgent care environments.
  • Experience working autonomously, mentoring and assessing others, and within a multi disciplinary team.
Qualifications
  • Degree level education or equivalent work experience demonstrating graduate level ability.
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration autonomous clinical practice, or equivalent.
  • Masters or specialist knowledge/experience gained through equivalent qualification.
  • Understanding of Integrated Governance and extended specialist CPD.
Salary

£46,148 to £52,809 per year, plus unsocial hours as per section 2.
