Clinical or Counselling Psychologist / CBT Therapist

To provide a highly specialist clinical psychology service within the South East London FND Network (FND ExSEL), delivering psychological assessment and treatment to adults with functional neurological disorders, and leading training, supervision and service-development work across the pathway.

Main duties of the job

Around half of the role will focus on direct clinical work, providing expert assessment, formulation and psychological treatment for adults with FND. This will include individual and group-based psychological interventions for people with functional seizures and motor disorders.

The remaining time will be dedicated to training, consultation and service development, helping to build capacity and confidence among multidisciplinary teams across South East London. The postholder will provide professional support and guidance to other clinicians within the service, including the Band 7 FND Care Coordinator. They will contribute to evaluation and development of the service including monitoring of clinical outcomes and audit.

Job responsibilities Clinical and Client Care

Provide highly specialist psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based therapy (CBT, ACT, EMDR or other appropriate models) to adults with FND, including dissociative seizures and functional motor disorder.

Deliver and evaluate group-based interventions for functional seizures and tic disorders.

Ensure accessibility and acceptability for diverse communities.

To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans where necessary.

Leadership and Service Development

Lead on developing and embedding psychologically informed care across the SEL FND Network.

Contribute to the development of clinical pathways and joint protocols between neurology, neuropsychiatry, acute and community services.

Initiate and lead service-evaluation, audit and quality-improvement projects demonstrating impact on patient outcomes and system efficiency.

Contribute to policy development and represent the psychology component of the pathway at regional MDTs and stakeholder meetings.

Training, Consultation and Supervision

Provide formal and informal supervision to junior psychology staff, trainees and MDT colleagues.

Deliver teaching, workshops and consultation to clinicians in acute hospitals, CNRTs and Talking Therapies services to build FND competence and confidence.

Support the dissemination and adaptation of evidence-based FND psychological interventions for delivery in local services.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Doctoral-level qualification in Clinical Psychology (HCPC registered) or entry level qualification in Psychotherapy that has been accepted by the BABCP for purposes of professional registration and qualification in CBT, MSc or a combination of specialist short courses and/or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher and registered with the BABCP as a Psychotherapist and evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature.
  • Specific training in recognised evidence-base therapies (e.g. EMDR).
