Overview of roleProvide professional and clinical leadership during non core hours and oversee site management across the seven day week. Manage resources, staffing and staff development, facilitate communication across healthcare teams, and cover duties in the absence of the ADON on duty, reporting directly to the Director of Nursing.
Play a pivotal role in service planning, development and activity management. Ensure quality of nursing care, policy implementation, service delivery and promote the values of UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Exercise authority and coordinate the functions of assigned area(s).
- Provide support, advice and direction to staff as required.
- Engage with the wider healthcare team and facilitate team building.
- Facilitate communication at ward and service level and with senior nurse management.
- Maintain staff motivation and foster good working relationships.
- Promote a culture of diversity, inclusivity and respect.
- Manage liaisons with internal and external bodies (e.g., intra hospital services, community, voluntary organisations).
- Contribute to strategic management and planning processes.
- Formulate service plans and budgets in cooperation with the wider healthcare team.
- Lead practice development within the clinical area.
- Efficiently manage staff and other resources to ensure high standards of service.
- Evaluate implementation of service plans and budgets.
- Provide reports on activity and services as required.
- Develop and manage departmental and nursing policy, emphasizing change management.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements, policies, protocols and procedures.
- Engage in IT developments as applicable to service user and service administration.
- Provide out of hours hospital management as required in accordance with the DON and GM.
- Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
- Deliver safe, comprehensive nursing care within the guidelines of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Practice nursing according to professional clinical guidelines, local policies, current legislation, and accreditation guidelines.
- Manage, monitor and evaluate professional and clinical standards with an evidence based care planning approach.
- Manage own caseload in accordance with post responsibilities.
- Participate in teams, communicate and collaborate with other professionals.
- Co ordinate, co operate and liaise across healthcare teams and programmes.
- Collaborate with service users, families and carers in care planning and support.
- Communicate assessment, treatment and recommendations to consultants and others as required.
- Formulate and implement best practice policies and procedures.
- Treat service users and patients with dignity and respect.
- Maintain nursing records in line with local and professional standards.
- Adhere to and contribute to the development of nursing standards and guidelines.
- Evaluate implementation of quality policies, admission and discharge procedures, stock control, grievance and disciplinary procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality, ethics and legislative standards.
- Implement and assess quality management programmes.
- Participate in clinical audit and research studies as required.
- Develop and implement health promotion programmes for service users.
- Operate within the scope of practice, seeking advice for cases beyond competence.
- Ensure staff work in compliance with scope of practice and code of professional conduct.
- Contribute to service development through continuous education, research initiatives and keeping up to date with nursing literature.
- Support staff in their continuous professional development.
- Be familiar with the curriculum for student nurses and clinical experience requirements.
- Participate in induction, education, training and development programmes.
- Provide supervision and professional development for staff.
- Engage in performance review and personal development planning.
- Communicate effectively to undertake post duties.
- Demonstrate effective writing and presentation skills.
- Foster good working relationships with colleagues and staff, maintaining high professional standards.
- Ensure safe and effective health, risk, quality and safety procedures are developed and managed.
- Take appropriate action on issues detrimental to staff or service user care.
- Adhere to policies and procedures: health & safety, infection control, controlled drugs, incident reporting.
- Maintain feedback mechanisms with the clinical risk manager and report to senior management as appropriate.
- Ensure acceptance of department policies regarding equipment and procurement.
- Have working knowledge of HIQA Standards relevant to the role.
- Registered in the general division of the NMBI Register of Nurses.
- At least seven years post registration nursing experience (full time or equivalent).
- Minimum of two years experience as Clinical Nurse Manager Grade 2.
- Recognised post registration nursing course - higher diploma or postgraduate degree (willing to undertake if not held).
- ACLS training completed or willing to complete within a designated timeframe.
