Key Responsibilities- Professional/ clinical leadership and management that promotes efficiency, innovation,teamwork and continuous quality improvements.
- Clinicalteaching for Post Graduate Nursing students.
- Provisionof formal and informal lectures and workshops for Post Graduate students.
- Orientationfor all new staff members in their area.
- In-serviceeducation including formal and informal education / training for staff in theDepartment and other staff in the ward areas when requested
- Developan orientation manual and induction programme that will enable staff to adaptto the Department and ensure through clinical teaching and patient allocationthat all staff are working within their capabilities and scope of practice.
- Developobjectives for all new staff joining the nursing team and provide unit basedclinical teaching for new staff, in association with other team members.
- Planrelevant clinical placements to facilitate the required experiences of the Postgraduatein nursing, in conjunction with programme leader in University College Dublin,Post Registration Nurse Tutor and relevant hospital staff.
- Familiarisecourse participants with the course programme and objectives, in conjunctionwith the Programme Leader in UCD, and Post Registration Nurse Tutor.
- DevelopLearning Outcomes appropriate to Post Graduate level, for students on clinicalplacements.
- Workwith students in the clinical area, assess their knowledge and plan theireducational development.
- Facilitatecourse participants in integrating theory to practice and promote the conceptof clinical skills teaching in the clinical area.
- Completecompetency assessments with course nurses with the input of senior staff andprovide counselling and guidance where necessary.
- Maintaina record of each student's experience and provide feedback to the student andrelevant Nurse Managers.
- Contributeto the development of the curriculum for the Postgraduate in area of specialistNursing.
- Providespecialist-nursing tutorials/lectures to Post Graduate students.
- Participatein devising exam questions and answer plans for written examinations for Postgraduate
- Liaisewith course leader in UCD and with Post registration Nurse Tutor in StVincent's University Hospital in relation to all aspects of the Higher Diplomain Nursing
- Supervisionof qualified and unqualified staff whilst maintaining a safe working andpatient environment.
- Participatein internal and external audit and accreditation processes such as JCI andHIQA.
- Ensureeffective communication with patients, relatives, visitors andmulti-disciplinary team members and ensure patient confidentiality is respectedby all staff and always maintained in line with hospital policy.
- Participatein the accreditation processes, identify continuous quality improvements anddevelop quality programmes in consultation with the Assistant Director ofNursing, CNM3's and multidisciplinary teams.
- Promotenursing by actively contributing at national conferences and meetings.
- Ensurethe implementation of all Hospital policies with special emphasis on safepractice.
- Contributeto practice development, and be involved in the writing of policies, standardsand guidelines in liaison with practice development.
- Liaiseand work with the group of Post-registration Clinical Facilitators employedacross the hospital in matters relating to education, nursing practice and thedevelopment of policies and procedures.
- Togetherwith the management team, be involved in identifying opportunities fordevelopment of nursing services that will improve the care of patients.
- Act as arole model in area of specialist practice and be an informed resource for allstaff. Take an active part in thedelivery of care as appropriate.
- Ensurethat the dignity of patients and staff is assured and always maintained, havingregard to the ethics, philosophy and mission of the hospital.
- Workwithin the code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, participate in thedevelopment of the Scope of Practice for nurses and provide strong professionalleadership / direction for nursing services in conjunction with the nursingteam.
- Encouragethe use of evidence based best practice in underpinning practice so thatnursing care is based on the latest research findings.
- Act as aclinical resource for both nursing and medical staff.
- Undertakeappropriate further education to ensure personal development and provide thenecessary knowledge to support the service needs within the scope of professionalpractice for intensive care nursing.
- Developa network of contacts and communication links with other professionals in thisspecialised field of care.
- Incorporatevalid research findings in ward staff development programmes.
- Encourageall staff of the multidisciplinary team to take responsibility for, and tobecome involved in quality led initiatives.
- Attendmeetings and receive staff suggestions for improvements in the deliveryofcare, having regard to patient care and developments in nursing practice.
- SupportClinical Nurse Managers and staff nurses in their teaching role ensuring thatstudents learning objectives and required competencies are achieved at unitlevel.
- Ensurenursing staff are selected and prepared for their role in supporting studentsand new members of staff in conjunction with the relevant nurse managers andnurse practice development staff.
- Determinethe educational needs of the nursing staff and make recommendations inconjunction with the clinical nurse managers and ADON as to how these needs aremet.
- Inconjunction with clinical nurse managers monitor and maintain records ofin-service education undertaken by all staff on the ward and with Learning andDevelopment
- Ensurethat each staff member's mandatory in-service education is in date and arrangeattendance as appropriate.
- Plan,co-ordinate and implement in-service / continuing education for nursing staffwith the assistance of Clinical Nurse Managers.
- Inconjunction with the clinical nurse managers and senior nursing staff,participate in probation assessment, staff review and professional developmentof staff within the Department.
- Updatereading and reference sources in the ward/department.
- Participatein the hospital wide in-service education programme where appropriate.
- Organiseown workload efficiently
- Help tofoster a supportive working environment.
- Communicateeffectively and plan with relevant personnel (post registration nurse tutor andCNM's) to ensure safe, efficient integration for rostering of students withinthe Critical Care Areas and outside agencies as appropriate.
- Haveresponsibility for health, safety and welfare at work in conjunction with theclinical nurse managers of self and others and comply with the Health andSafety Regulations and all hospital policies.
- Encourageall nursing team members to be professional in their appearance and conduct.
- Work onand attend committees / managerial and clinical meetings relevant of the roleof the Clinical Facilitator.
- Contributeto initiatives to retain staff.
- Prepareand submit an Annual Report of the Work Activities of the Clinical NurseFacilitators to the CNM3/ADON.
- Contributeto the Nursing Department's Annual Report
- Comply with Nurses and Midwifery Board ofIreland (NMBI) Code of Professional Conduct.
