We are seeking a talented Claims Counsel to join our Professional Lines Division at our new headquarters in Richmond, VA. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who wants hands on responsibility, sophisticated exposure analysis, and meaningful influence in complex liability matters-without the billable hour model.
What You'll DoAs Claims Counsel, you will manage a diverse portfolio of litigated and pre suit professional liability claims, including:
- Employment Practices Liability
- Healthcare and Medical Professional Liability
- Legal malpractice
- Law enforcement liability
- Directors & Officers Liability
- Miscellaneous professional liability risks
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting thorough factual investigations and developing early case strategies
- Analyzing and interpreting complex coverage issues; drafting clear and well supported coverage determinations and correspondence
- Evaluating liability and damages exposure, including high severity and reputational risk matters
- Managing claims involving healthcare entities, corporate boards, senior executives, and employment related allegations
- Appointing, directing, and strategically managing defense counsel
- Driving litigation toward efficient resolution through proactive oversight
- Negotiating settlements and attending mediations
- Maintaining detailed and accurate claim documentation
- Collaborating closely with underwriting and senior claims leadership on complex risk issues
This role offers meaningful autonomy while working under the guidance of an experienced Claims Supervisor.
What We're Looking ForWe are seeking a motivated attorney who combines strong legal analysis with practical business judgment.
Qualifications- Experience in handling or litigating Employment Practices, professional liability, or healthcare-related claims preferred
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate coverage and liability in complex matters
- Strong written communication skills, particularly in drafting coverage analyses and correspondence
- Confident oral communicator with effective negotiation skills
- Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple active litigated files
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team oriented environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Minimum of 2 years of professional legal experience (insurance coverage, litigation, or professional liability experience preferred)
